FUELCUTMODE
Energyflowfromwheelstocrankshaft(nofuelburned)
Whenever the Insightis moving with the clutch engaged and the transmission in gear, the gasoline
engineismechanicallyconnectedtothewheels,andsoitmustcontinuetoturnalso.However,thisdoesn't
necessarilymeanthatitisconsuminganyfuel.
Duringdeceleration,if theclutch isengagedandthe transmissionisingear, theIMAwilltypically
enter fuel cut mode. This is considered a separate mode from idle stop mode, as the engine (and by
extensionanyengine-drivenaccessoriessuchastheairconditioningcompressor)iscontinuingtobeturned
bythewheels.Inidlestopmode,theengineisnotturningatall.
Fuelcutmodewilltakeplaceatenginespeedsabove1100rpm.Iftheenginespeedfallsbelow1100
rpm,fuelwillbesuppliedtopreventtheenginefromstallingwhenthedriverreleasestheclutch.
So,thisiswhattakesplaceduringatypicaldeceleration:
• Whenthedriverreleasestheacceleratorpedal,alowlevelofregenerativebrakingtakesplace,
andthegasolineengineentersfuelcutmode.
• When the brake pedal is applied, a higher level of regenerative braking takes place. The
engineisstillinfuelcutmode,rotatingbutnotburninganyfuel.
• Whenthe driver presses theclutch pedal,the carmaynowenteridle stopmodewherethe
enginenolongerturnsatall.Inthiscase,nofuelwillbeconsumedfromthetimethedriver
begandeceleratinguntilthedriverreaccelerates.Iftheconditionsforidlestoparenotsatisfied
whenthedriverreleasestheclutchpedal(forinstance,batterylevelistoolow),fuelcutmode
willend,andfuelwillbedeliveredtotheenginetokeepitrunning.
