AIR FILTER
Inspection
1. Move the choke lever to the CLOSED (E) position to prevent dirt
from entering the engine.
2. Squeeze together the air cleaner upper tabs at the top of the air
cleaner cover to release it from its catch, then flip the cover down
to remove it.
3. Check the air filter to be sure it is clean, properly oiled, and in good
condition.
4. If the air filter is dirty, clean it as described under Cleaning on this
page. Replace the air filter if it is damaged.
NOTICE
Operating the engine without an air filter, or with a dry or damaged
air filter, will allow dirt to enter the engine causing rapid engine
wear. This type of damage is not covered by the DISTRIBUTOR’S
LIMITED WARRANTY (
page 21).
5. Align the air filter with the air cleaner base as shown. Reinstall the
air filter by locating the three air cleaner base pegs into the three
air filter holes. Slide the air filter over the pegs until it is flush with
the air cleaner base.
NOTICE
An improperly installed air filter will allow dirt to enter the engine,
causing rapid engine wear. Make sure the air filter is properly
installed and flush with the air cleaner base before installing the air
cleaner cover.
6. Reinstall the air cleaner cover by hooking the two lower tabs on the
bottom of the cover and snapping the upper tabs into place.
Cleaning
A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine
performance. If you operate the tiller in very dusty areas, clean the air
filter more often than specified in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
(
page 8).
We recommend using MOTUL air filter oil, which is available from
your authorized Honda dealer (page 20).
1. Remove the air filter.
2. Clean the air filter in warm soapy
water, rinse, and allow it to dry
thoroughly. Or, clean in
nonflammable solvent and allow
it to dry.
3. Dip the air filter in MOTUL air
filter oil or clean engine oil, and
then squeeze out all excess oil.
The engine will be hard to start or
will smoke when started if too
much oil is left in the air filter.
NOTICE
Operating the engine with a dry
air filter will allow dust to enter
causing engine damage. The air
filter must be oiled after cleaning.
4. Wipe dirt from the air cleaner
base and cover using a moist rag.
Be careful to prevent dirt from
entering the carburetor.
5. Reinstall the air filter and air filter
cover.
