02/01/14 13:18:42 31YG0600_007 PUMP SAFETY Hot Exhaust The muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a while after stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot. Let the engine cool before transporting the pump or storing it indoors. To prevent fire hazards, keep the pump at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from building walls and other equipment during operation. Do not place flammable objects close to the engine.

FUEL VALVE LEVER The fuel valve lever must be in the ON position for the engine to run. When the engine is not in use, leave the fuel valve lever in the OFF position to prevent carburetor flooding and to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage. OFF ON Ignition Switch IGNITION SWITCH The ignition switch controls the ignition system.

THROTTLE LEVER Moving the throttle lever in the directions shown makes the engine run faster or slower. Pump output is controlled by adjusting the throttle lever. At maximum throttle position, the pump will deliver the highest output volume. Moving the throttle lever toward the idle position will decrease the output volume of the pump.

Be sure the hoses are in serviceable condition before connecting them to the pump. Remember that the suction hose must be reinforced construction to prevent hose collapse. Check that the sealing washer in the suction hose connector is in good condition (see page 17 ). Check that the hose connectors and clamps are securely installed (see pages 17 and 18 ).

That will enable the pump to produce the greatest output with the least self-priming time. As head (pumping height) increases, pump output decreases. The length, type, and size of the suction and discharge hoses can also significantly affect pump output.

The suction hose must be reinforced with a noncollapsible wall or braided wire construction. The suction hose should be no longer than necessary. Pump performance is best when the pump is near the water level, and the hoses are short.

DISCHARGE HOSE HOSE CONNECTOR It is best to use a short, largediameter hose, because that will reduce fluid friction and improve pump performance. A long or small-diameter hose will increase fluid friction and reduce pump output. Tighten the hose clamp securely to prevent the discharge hose from disconnecting under high pressure.

If the engine has been running, allow it to cool first. Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes can reach flames or sparks. Refuel carefully to avoid spilling fuel. Do not fill above the maximum fuel level. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive.

Be careful not to spill fuel when filling your fuel tank. Damage caused by spilled fuel is not covered under the Distributor’s Limited Warranty. FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher.
07/05/29 13:25:20 31YG0600_030 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position. 1. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe it clean. 2. Insert and remove the dipstick without screwing it into the filler neck. Check the oil level shown on the dipstick. 3. If the oil level is low, fill to the edge of the oil filler hole with the recommended oil (see page 31 ). 4. Screw in the oil filler cap/dipstick securely.
07/05/29 13:25:31 31YG0600_031 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL CHANGE Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. 1. Place a suitable container below the engine to catch the used oil, then remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and the drain plug. 2. Allow the used oil to drain completely, then reinstall the drain plug, and tighten it securely. Please dispose of used motor oil in a manner that is compatible with the environment.
07/05/29 13:25:38 31YG0600_032 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS Use 4-stroke motor oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service category SJ or later (or equivalent). Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes the letters SJ or later (or equivalent). AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the indicated range.

Check the air filter to be sure it is clean and in good condition. 2. If the air filter is dirty, clean it as described on page 33 . Replace the air filter if it is damaged. 3. Reinstall the air cleaner cover, and tighten the wing nut securely.

If you operate the pump in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more frequently than specified in the Maintenance Schedule (see page 26 ). WING NUT 1. Unscrew the wing nut from the air cleaner cover, and remove the air cleaner cover. AIR CLEANER 2. Unscrew the wing nut from the COVER air filter, and remove the air WING NUT filter. 3.

Wipe up spills immediately. 2. Wash the sediment cup in non-flammable solvent, and dry it thoroughly. 3.

Recommended spark plug: BPR6ES (NGK) W20EPR-U (DENSO) Incorrect spark plugs can cause engine damage. 1. Disconnect the spark plug cap, and remove any dirt from around the spark plug area. 2. Remove the spark plug with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench. SPARK PLUG WRENCH SPARK PLUG CAP 3. Inspect the spark plug.
02/01/14 13:23:30 31YG0600_037 SERVICING YOUR PUMP 5. Install the spark plug carefully, by hand, to avoid cross-threading. 6. After the spark plug seats, tighten with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench to compress the washer. If reinstalling the used spark plug, tighten 1/8 1/4 turn after the spark plug seats. If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark plug seats. A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine.
02/01/14 13:23:40 31YG0600_038 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE (optional equipment) Your engine is not factory-equipped with a spark arrester. In some areas, it is illegal to operate an engine without a spark arrester. Check local laws and regulations. A spark arrester is available from authorized Honda servicing dealers. The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it functioning as designed. If the engine has been running, the muffler will be very hot.

MUFFLER 4 mm SCREW (2) SPARK ARRESTER 3. Use a brush to remove carbon deposits from the spark arrester screen. Be careful to avoid damaging the screen. Remove the pump cover and the volute case from the pump casing, and remove any debris from pump casing and volute case.

After tightening the pump cover knobs, check the pump cover and pump casing to ensure that there is no water leakage.

The following steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your pump’s function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use the pump again. Cleaning 1. Wash the engine and pump. Wash the engine by hand, and be careful to prevent water from entering the air cleaner or muffler opening.

Pour a tablespoon (5 10 cc) of clean engine oil into the cylinder. 4. Pull the starter grip several times to distribute the oil in the cylinder. 5. Reinstall the spark plug. 6. Pull the starter grip slowly until resistance is felt and the notch on the starter pulley aligns with the hole at the top of the recoil starter cover.

Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting. Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine was certified, for extended periods of time, may increase emissions.

Carbon monoxide does not react in the same way, but it is toxic.
