09/03/16 18:57:51 31YE9603_007 PUMP SAFETY Hot Exhaust The muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a while after stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muffler while it is hot. Let the engine cool before transporting the pump or storing it indoors. To prevent fire hazards, keep the pump at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from building walls and other equipment during operation. Do not place flammable objects close to the engine.

ON Turning the ignition switch to the OFF position stops the engine. OFF IGNITION SWITCH Choke Lever The choke lever opens and closes the choke valve in the carburetor. CLOSED The CLOSED position enriches the fuel mixture for starting a cold engine.

MAXIMUM THROTTLE Pump output is controlled by adjusting the throttle lever. At maximum throttle position, the pump will deliver the highest output volume. Moving the throttle lever toward the idle position will decrease the output volume of the pump.

Be sure the hoses are in serviceable condition before connecting them to the pump. Remember that the suction hose must be reinforced construction to prevent hose collapse. Check that the sealing washer in the suction hose connector is in good condition (see page 16 ). Check that the hose connectors and clamps are securely installed (see pages 16 and 17 ).

For best pump performance, place the pump near the water level, and use hoses that are no longer than necessary. That will enable the pump to produce the greatest output with the least self-priming time. As head (pumping height) increases, pump output decreases.
09/03/16 18:59:03 31YE9603_017 OPERATION SUCTION HOSE INSTALLATION Use the hose, hose connector and hose clamp provided with the pump. The suction hose must be reinforced with a noncollapsible wall or braided wire construction to prevent suction hose collapse. The suction hose should be no longer than necessary. Pump performance is best when the pump is near the water level, and the hoses are short. Never use a suction hose with an inside diameter less than 25 mm (1 inch).
09/03/16 18:59:10 31YE9603_018 OPERATION DISCHARGE HOSE INSTALLATION Attach a hose and hose connector to the pump’s discharge port. It is best to use a short, large-diameter hose, because this will reduce fluid friction and improve pump performance. A long or smalldiameter hose will increase fluid friction and reduce pump output. If the discharge hose is equipped with a shutoff valve or nozzle, do not shut off the discharge water for a long period of time, as that could cause the pump to overheat.

If the garden hose is equipped with a shut off valve or nozzle, do not shut off the discharge water for a long period of time, as that could cause the pump to overheat. Do not install the adapter on the pump suction port. Garden hose is not suitable for use as suction hose, because it will restrict flow and cause the pump to cavitate, damaging the pump.
09/03/16 18:59:22 31YE9603_020 OPERATION PRIMING THE PUMP Before starting the engine, remove the filler cap from the pump chamber, and completely fill the pump chamber with water. Reinstall the filler cap, and tighten it securely. Operating the pump dry will destroy the pump seal. If the pump has been operated dry, stop the engine immediately, and allow the pump to cool before priming. PUMP CHAMBER FILLER CAP STARTING THE ENGINE 1. To start a cold engine, move the choke lever to the CLOSED position.

Hold the carrying handle securely and pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance, then pull briskly in the direction of the arrow as shown below. Do not allow the recoil starter grip to snap back against the engine. Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter.

Pump output is controlled by adjusting engine speed. Moving the throttle lever in the HIGH direction will increase pump output, and moving the throttle lever in the LOW direction will decrease pump output.

Under normal conditions, use the following procedure. 1. Move the throttle lever to the LOW position. LOW THROTTLE LEVER 2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. IGNITION SWITCH OFF After use, remove the pump drain plug (see page 46 ), and drain the pump chamber. Remove the filler cap, and flush the pump chamber with clean, fresh water.

If the fuel level is low, refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool first. Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes can reach flames or sparks. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You can be burned or seriously injured when handling fuel.
09/03/16 19:00:23 31YE9603_030 SERVICING YOUR PUMP To refuel, rest the engine on the ground with the fuel tank cap facing up, as shown. Remove the fuel tank cap, and fill the tank with gasoline to the bottom of the filler neck. Refuel carefully to avoid spilling fuel. Do not overfill. There should no fuel in the filler neck. After refueling, tighten the fuel tank cap securely. Spilled fuel is not only a fire hazard, it causes environmental damage. Wipe up spills immediately.

Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position. 1. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe it clean. 2. Insert and remove the dipstick without screwing it into the filler neck. Check the oil level shown on the dipstick. 3.

09/03/16 19:00:40 31YE9603_033 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL CHANGE Drain the used oil while the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. 1. Check that the fuel tank cap is tightened securely. 2. Place a suitable container next to the engine to catch the used oil. 3. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and drain the oil into the container by tipping the engine toward the oil filler neck. Please dispose of used motor oil in a manner that is compatible with the environment.
09/03/16 19:00:46 31YE9603_034 SERVICING YOUR PUMP 4. With the engine in a level position, fill to the edge of the oil filler hole with the recommended oil (see page 34 ). Some oil will remain in the engine after draining. When refilling with fresh oil, start with less than 2.7 US oz. (80 cc). Slowly add enough oil to fill to the edge of the oil filler hole as shown below. Running the engine with a low or excessive oil level can cause engine damage.
09/03/16 19:00:51 31YE9603_035 SERVICING YOUR PUMP ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service life. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. Use 4-stroke motor oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service category SJ or later (or equivalent). Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes the letters SJ or later (or equivalent). AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use.
09/03/16 19:00:57 31YE9603_036 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER INSPECTION Press the latch tab on the top of the air cleaner cover, and remove the cover. Check the air filter to be sure it is clean and in good condition. If the air filter is dirty, clean it as described on page 36 . Replace the air filter if it is damaged. Reinstall the air filter and air cleaner cover. Operating the engine without an air filter, or with a damaged air filter, will allow dirt to enter the engine, causing rapid engine wear.
09/03/16 19:01:03 31YE9603_037 SERVICING YOUR PUMP AIR FILTER CLEANING A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the pump in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more frequently than specified in the Maintenance Schedule (see page 27 ). 1. Clean the air filter in warm soapy water, rinse, and allow to dry thoroughly. Or clean in nonflammable solvent and allow to dry. 2. Dip the air filter in clean engine oil, then squeeze out all excess oil.
09/03/16 19:01:10 31YE9603_038 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK PLUG SERVICE In order to service the spark plug, you will need a spark plug wrench (commercially available). Recommended spark plug: CMR5H (NGK) Incorrect spark plugs can cause engine damage. 1. Remove the top cover. Loosen the 5 mm hex bolt with a hexagon wrench, then remove the top cover. You may be injured from rotating parts or burned by the muffler. Do not operate the engine when the top cover is removed.
09/03/16 19:01:17 31YE9603_039 SERVICING YOUR PUMP 2. First remove any dirt from around the spark plug area, then disconnect the spark plug cap. 3. Remove the spark plug with a 5/8-inch spark plug wrench. SPARK PLUG CAP SPARK PLUG WRENCH 4. Inspect the spark plug. Replace it if the electrodes are worn, or if the insulator is cracked or chipped. 5. M e a s u r e t h e s p a r k p l u g electrode gap with a wire-type feeler gauge. Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully bending the side electrode.

If reinstalling the used spark plug, tighten 1/8 1/4 turn after the spark plug seats. If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark plug seats. A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head. 8. Attach the spark plug cap. 9.

09/03/16 19:01:50 31YE9603_044 SERVICING YOUR PUMP SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it functioning as designed. If the engine has been running, the muffler will be very hot. Allow the muffler to cool before servicing the spark arrester. 1. Loosen the 5 mm hex bolt with a hexagon wrench, then remove the top cover (see page 37 ). 2. Remove the 4 mm screws from the spark arrester, and remove the spark arrester from the muffler.

The spark arrester must be free of breaks and holes. Replace the spark arrester if it is damaged. SPARK ARRESTER SCREEN 4. Install the spark arrester in the reverse order of disassembly. When you attach the spark arrester, spark arrester’s outlet must be pointed toward the side opposite the spark plug. 5.

The following steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your pump’s function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use the pump again. Cleaning 1. Wash the engine and pump. Wash the engine by hand, and be careful to prevent water from entering the air cleaner or muffler opening.

Allow the water to drain from the pump chamber, then reinstall the drain plug. 6. After the pump is clean and dry, touch up any damaged paint, and coat areas that may rust with a light film of oil. Lubricate controls with a silicone spray lubricant. PUMP DRAIN PLUG Fuel Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage.

If only partially filled, air in the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline. 1. Add fuel stabilizer following the manufacturer’s instructions. 2.

If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tank with fresh gasoline. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline. Gasoline oxidizes and deteriorates over time, causing hard starting. If the cylinder was coated with oil during storage preparation, the engine may smoke briefly at startup. This is normal.

Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting. Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine was certified, for extended periods of time, may increase emissions.

Control of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen is very important because, under certain conditions, they react to form photochemical smog when subjected to sunlight. Carbon monoxide does not react in the same way, but it is toxic.
