The concentration of oxygen dissolved in water (or
other liquid) may be described by either “dissolved
oxygen (DO) concentration” or percent saturation.
The units for DO are either parts per million - PPM
(equivalent to milligrams per liter) or parts per billion -
PPB (equivalent to micrograms per liter). The units of
saturation are percent where 100% saturation is
equivalent to the concentration of oxygen dissolved in
air-saturated water. For instance, at 25°C and one
atmosphere pressure, 8.24 ppm = 100% saturation.
Although the ppm and ppb concentration units are the
most frequently used units by far, % saturation may
be appropriate for non-aqueous liquids like vegetable
oil.
