Way Guidance Marker
EXIT
General
The EXITi way guidance system has two high brightness flashing LEDs,
one green and one red in each unit. The high intensity flash is controlled
by a small microprocessor to ensure that battery consumption is kept to
an absolute minimum. The green LED flashes every 1.5 to 2 seconds and
the red LED at approximately 5 seconds intervals. The intensity and flash
rate have been chosen to give penetration of un-survivable smoke to at
least five metres. Three alkaline batteries are provided to give a battery
oo
life of up to 6 years at temperatures of between 18 C and 30 C.
The unique design of the lens at each end of the polycarbonate enclosure concentrates the beam of light into a directional
cone to enable the EXITi to be sited at approximately five metre intervals in corridors up to 3m wide. In wider corridors they
should be sited on both sides of the corridor and the spacing staggered at the intervals shown in the diagram below.
In tests conducted in the Merseyside Fire Brigade Fire House to determine light penetration at increasing smoke densities it
was found that the latest technology green LEDs used in the EXITi continued to be visible several minutes after a typical
mains powered back illuminated fire exit sign with down lighter was obscured. The high powered beam of green light was
able to penetrate dense smoke in what the fire brigade consider to be unsurvivable levels without breathing apparatus.
Installation
EXITi units should be sited at dado rail height or lower on escape route corridors and stairwells. Although the enclosure is
polycarbonate they should not be mounted on skirting boards as scuffing will damage the appearance. Two screws and
plastic wall plugs are provided. The fixing holes in the EXITi are elongated for alignment. Different surfaces may require
different methods of fixing.
When fitting batteries ensure the correct polarity. If in doubt ask. This is very important as reverse
polarity will damage the unit.
Fit the circuit board to the back plate with the self adhesive pad provided. You must ensure that the green and red LEDs
are correctly orientated (see photo above). The angle of the LEDs can be changed slightly to direct the cone of light up,
down or away from the wall as desired. Remember the light from the green LED of the EXITi should NOT be directed into
the eyes of everyday users (see diagram below). The green LED should be directed to a person crawling through smoke.
Following the green LEDs leads escaping persons out of the building. The red LED is included to indicate the return route
for the fire brigade in searching a smoke filled building. The red LED should therefore NOT be elevated up or down.
Fit the cover with the two M3 x 20mm bolts. Do not tighten so as to distort the cover. Select the correct self adhesive
direction label and fit within the recessed area. The arrow should point in the direction of the nearest FIRE EXIT. The red
LED at the head of the arrow and the green LED at the running man end of the label.
A multi-lingual (English, French, German, Italian) Fire Action signs is available. These can be sited above the EXITi or in
the case of hotels in each bedrooms. Additional signs are available in packs of 10.
Check monthly that both red and green LEDs are flashing. Batteries should be replaced every five years. Packs of 30 AA
alkaline 1.5v batteries, 10 of each direction label and 10 Fire Action signs are also available.
Use only AA 1.5 volt Alkaline batteries. Do NOT use rechargeable (NiCad, MiMH) or lithium batteries of the same size, they
are NOT suitable and may cause damage.
