Creating a Virtual Copy
3PAR Recovery Manager 4.1.0 For Microsoft Exchange 2010 User’s Guide
When setting the virtual copy limit, you can also optionally select the Remove Old Virtual
Copies radio button indicating that the oldest virtual copy for each Mailbox Database is
automatically removed once the set maximum limit of virtual copies is reached.
If the Remove Old Virtual Copies checkbox is unselected, once the set maximum limit is
met, a new virtual copy cannot be created until you manually delete any old virtual copies.
To set Recovery Manager policies:
1 Start the Recovery Manager application (see Starting the GUI on page 6.5).
2 From the node tree, right-click the Mailbox Server that is to be configured and select
Policy.
Result: The Recovery Manager Policy dialog box appears.
3 Enter the Maximum Virtual copies kept in InServ in the text field.
4 If you want to remove the oldest virtual copy, select Remove the oldest Virtual Copies
option. If you want to keep the oldest virtual copy, select Retain the oldest Virtual
Copies option.
5 Click OK.
6.6 Creating a Virtual Copy
Virtual copies are created at the Mailbox Database level for the Microsoft Exchange Server,
since this is the recoverable unit defined by Microsoft. The log files for all the mailbox data
stores are managed at the Mailbox Database level. Therefore, when Recovery Manager creates
a virtual copy for a Mailbox Database it creates a virtual copy of all virtual volumes where the
information store, log, and system files reside to preserve the data consistency. A virtual copy
can also be created and saved in a remote server.
NOTE: If the oldest virtual copy is mounted, a snapshot will not be created until it
is unmounted.
NOTE: The virtual copy policy is effective immediately.
