Control panel buttons and indicator lights Figure 2-2 Control panel and indicator lights Label Description 1 On: Press to turn the printer on or off. The On button will glow when the power is on. 2 Memory card and PictBridge light: This light flashes and then remains lit after a memory card is correctly inserted or when a supported device is attached to the camera port.
Chapter 2 Use the touch screen Use your fingers on the touch screen for most operations, such as menu navigation or selecting options in the touch screen frame. For more information, see The touch screen frame. The printer chirps once for each button press. You can change the volume of the sounds or turn them off in the Preferences menu. You can also use the stylus for these activities, but it is designed primarily for drawing and entering captions through the touch screen keyboard.
There are two stylus storage areas on the printer: a slot that stores the stylus until you need to use it and a hole where you can rest the stylus and keep it handy. Figure 2-3 Stylus storage areas Description 1 Stylus well: Place the stylus here to keep it handy while you work with your photos. 2 Stylus storage slot: Securely store the stylus here when moving the printer or between sessions.
Chapter 2 Photosmart Menu The following options are available in the Photosmart menu when you insert a memory card or touch the Home icon on the touch screen frame. Get started 1 Bluetooth indicator light: Indicates whether bluetooth is on or off. 2 Ink level: Indicates the amount of ink estimated to be remaining in the print cartridge. 3 Setup icon: Touch to open the setup menu. 4 View and Print: Lets you view, edit, and print photos on a memory card.

Chapter 2 Thumbnail view and 1-up view You can view photos on your memory card in thumbnail view or 1-up view. Photo icons Photo icons appear on photos and video clips in thumbnail and 1-up views. Some icons show the status of a photo or video clip. Others can affect the photo or video clip when touched. Table 2-1 Photo icons Photo icon Description X1 Print status: Indicates the photo is printing, and how many copies of the photo will be printed. Copies: Touch a photo in 1-up view to select it for printing and to display the copies scroll bar. Touch the scroll bar to change the number of copies to be printed.
Chapter 2 How to use the Setup Menu This section describes how to use the Setup Menu. To use the setup menu 1. Touch Home on the touch screen frame to return to the Photosmart menu, if necessary. 2. Touch the Setup icon on the Photosmart menu to open the Setup Menu.
3. Touch a menu name to open the options under that menu. Options that are not accessible are dimmed. Touch the question mark icon for help on that screen. Tools • Print Test Page Touch to print a test page that contains information about the printer. The test page helps in troubleshooting problems. • Print Sample Page Touch to print a sample page.
Chapter 2 Get started Preferences • Sound: Touch to change the sound volume to High, Medium (default), Low, or Off. • Print Preview: Touch to change the print preview to On (default) or Off. This will provide a preview of the image when you touch Print. Touch Print again to print the image. • Photo Fix: Touch to turn Photo Fix enhancements On (default) or Off. For more information, see Use Photo Fix. • Red Eye Removal: Touch to turn red eye removal to On (default) or Off.
Bluetooth ◦ Bluetooth Radio: Select On to turn on Bluetooth Radio. ◦ Passkey: When the Bluetooth Security Level of the printer is set to High, you must enter a passkey to make the printer available to other Bluetooth devices. The default passkey is 0000. ◦ Device Name: You can select a name for the printer that appears on other devices with Bluetooth wireless technology when they locate the printer.

3 Paper basics Learn how to choose the right paper for your print job and how to load it into the input tray for printing. • • Choose the best paper for the job Load your paper Choose the best paper for the job Use HP Advanced Photo Paper. It is especially designed to work with the inks in your printer to create beautiful photos. Other photo papers might produce inferior results. Load up to 20 sheets of photo paper with the print side or glossy side facing the front of the printer. If you are using tabbed paper, load the paper so tab feeds in last. When loading, slide the paper to the left side of the input tray and push the paper down firmly until it stops. 3.
Paper basics You can select from a greater number of paper sizes when you print from a computer than when you print without a computer. When you print without a computer, the printer senses the paper size being used and scales the image to fit on the paper size being used.

Print from a Bluetooth device This section describes how to print from any device with Bluetooth wireless technology, a short-range communications technology that enables a wide range of devices to connect with each other without the clutter of cables.
Chapter 4 Print from a Bluetooth device To connect to and print from other Bluetooth devices 1. Make sure that you have installed the necessary software on the Bluetooth device. 2. Have the HP Photosmart search for available Bluetooth devices. NOTE: It is required that the Bluetooth Radio is turned on to enable the Bluetooth options in the Bluetooth Menu. 3. Select your device from the list of available Bluetooth devices.

You can select photos while the memory card is in the camera (Digital Print Order Format, or DPOF) or while the memory card is in the printer.
Chapter 5 Supported memory cards The HP Photosmart printer can read a variety of memory cards. These cards are manufactured by several vendors and are available in a variety of storage capacities. • • • • • • MultiMediaCard Secure Digital Memory Sticks, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo xD-Picture Card miniSD Card with SD adapter SDHC CAUTION: Using unsupported memory cards may damage the memory card and the printer.
Print photos from a memory card or USB device This section describes several ways to print photos from a memory card, including one photo, multiple photos, multiple copies of the same photo, and so on. Important: Your photos are instantly dry, and can be handled immediately after they are printed.
Chapter 5 4. If you want several copies of the same photo, touch the up and down arrows on the copies icon and set the number of copies to be printed. ▲ In thumbnail view, touch Select All and then Deselect All. The checkmark icon is deleted from all photos. To print a photo index 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch Create and navigate to Photo Layouts using the arrow keys. 3. Touch Photo Layouts, and then touch Index Page. 4. Touch Yes to print an index page. NOTE: An index page print will not provide a print preview, once Yes is selected it will just print.
Chapter 5 Remove a memory card CAUTION: Do not pull out the memory card while the memory card/camera port light is flashing. A flashing light means the printer or computer is accessing the memory card. Wait until the light remains solid. Removing a memory card while it is being accessed may corrupt information on the card or damage the printer and card. To remove a memory card ▲ When the memory card/camera port light on the printer is solid, it is safe to pull the card out of the slot.
4. If you already selected photos for printing on the camera, the Print DPOF Photos? dialog box is displayed on the camera. Select No to bypass printing pre-selected photos. DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) lets the user mark photos on a digital camera for printing and include other image information, such as number of copies to be printed. 5. Use the options and controls on your camera to print your photos. See the camera documentation for more information.

You can select from several categories, including: Seasons, Kids, Daily Life, and Special Events. Each frame has a landscape and portrait version. Print without a computer To use the Frames creative option 1.
for the text. You can type uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and common punctuation marks and symbols. To use the Caption creative option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch View and Print on the Photosmart menu. 3. Navigate to the photo you wish to edit, and then touch Effect when viewing a photo in 1-up view. 4. Touch the Caption creative option. Use the onscreen arrows to navigate to this option if it is not visible. 5. Type on the onscreen keyboard.
Chapter 5 Touch Done, and then choose a font and color. You can enlarge/decrease the caption, move it to a different location on the photo, or rotate it, or accept the default size/location/orientation. 6. When you are finished, touch Done. 7. To save your creative project, touch Save to Card. NOTE: If you choose Continue without Saving, you can later delete the caption from the photo by touching the Effect button in 1-up view and then touching Caption. Follow the prompts on the touch screen.
7. When you are finished, touch Done. 8. To save your creative project, touch Save to Card. NOTE: If you choose Continue without Saving, you can later delete the drawing from the photo by touching the Effect button in 1-up view and then touching Remove Draw. Follow the prompts on the touch screen. Once you remove the memory card or turn off the printer, the drawing(s) are deleted, unless you chose to save them to the card. Add clip art To use the Clip Art creative option 1.
Chapter 5 You can apply various special effects including Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Slimming, Retro, and Posterize depending on the category you choose. You can also modify the effect by changing the settings available for that effect. Print without a computer To use the Design Gallery creative option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch View and Print on the Photosmart menu. 3. Navigate to the photo you wish to edit, and then touch Effect when viewing a photo in 1-up view. 4.
Create albums To use the Albums creative option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch Create on the Photosmart menu. 3. Touch the Albums creative option. Use the onscreen arrows to navigate to this option if it is not visible. NOTE: If you want to zoom or rotate a photo, do it before you enter album mode. You cannot manipulate a photo when you are viewing it in an album. 4. Touch the desired category to view the albums available in that category.
Chapter 5 9. In the Album Pages window the recommended number of pages that will create the best looking album is displayed. Change the number of pages if desired, and then touch Done. Set the number of copies, and then touch Done.The album opens with the selected photos placed on pages. The first selected photo appears on the album cover page. Create Greeting Cards To use the Greeting Card creative option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch Create on the Photosmart menu. 3. Touch the Greeting Cards creative option. Use the onscreen arrows to navigate to this option if it is not visible. NOTE: If you want to zoom or rotate a photo, do it before you enter the greeting card mode. You cannot manipulate a photo when you are viewing it in a greeting card. 4. Navigate to the photo you wish to edit. 5. Touch the desired greeting card.
Chapter 5 7. Set the number of copies, and then touch Done. 8. Touch Print. NOTE: You cannot save greeting cards. Print as many copies of your greeting card as you need before you turn off the printer or remove the memory card. Passport photos Print without a computer To use Passport Photos mode 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch Create on the Photosmart menu. 3. Touch Passport Photos. Use the onscreen arrows to navigate to this option if it is not visible. 4.
4. Load 10 x 30 cm (4 x 12 inches) paper when prompted. Touch OK. 5. Browse through your photos and touch one to open it in 1-up view. While the Panoramic Photos mode is on, the printer displays photos in the panoramic aspect ratio. This means only part of each photo appears. To change the area of the photo that prints, touch the photo to open it in 1-up view, and then touch Edit, and then touch Crop. The entire photo is displayed, but the crop box is in the panoramic aspect ratio.
Chapter 5 Create Photo Layouts The Photo Layouts creative option lets you print several photos on a single sheet of paper. Print without a computer To use the Photo Layouts creative option 1. Insert a memory card or USB flash drive. 2. Touch Create on the Photosmart menu. 3. Touch the Photo Layout creative option. Use the onscreen arrows to navigate to this option if it is not visible. 4. Touch the desired layout type, and then select the photos you want to print using that layout. 5.
Enhance or edit your photos You can enhance or edit your photos in various ways, as explained in the following: • • • • • • Use Photo Fix Crop a photo Remove red-eye from your photos Use Pet Eye Fix Adjust photo brightness Touch up a photo Use Photo Fix • • • • Sharpen photos. Improve the dark areas of a photo without affecting the light areas of a photo. Improve the overall brightness, color, and contrast of photos. Auto-align photos.
Chapter 5 4. Touch the Rotate icon if you want to rotate the crop box 90 degrees clockwise. 5. Drag the crop box with your finger or the stylus to reposition it, touch Done, and then touch Print. Remove red-eye from your photos The printer provides a way to reduce red-eye that can occur in photos taken with a flash. To remove red-eye 1. Touch the Setup icon to display the Setup menu. 6 Print from a computer This section describes how to print photos when the HP Photosmart A640 series printer is connected to a computer, and you want to print a photo from an image editing application. Chapter 6 NOTE: Set up the printer and install the printer software before trying to transfer or print photos from a connected computer. For more information, see Software installation. To save photos from a memory card to a connected computer 1. Insert a memory card that contains photos into the correct memory card slot in the printer. 2. Follow the prompts on your computer. 3. Follow the steps for your operating system.

To back up photos from a memory card to another storage device 1. Chapter 6 Print panoramic photos For true panoramic printing, you must have taken a panoramic photo. Also, use HP panorama paper 10 x 30 cm (4 x 12 inch). Guidelines • To learn how to use the photo printing features, see photo enhancing. • Verify that the photo paper you are using is not rippled or curled. • Do not exceed the paper tray capacity when loading media. Print on index cards and other small media Guidelines • Use only cards and small media that meet the printer paper-size specifications. • Do not exceed the paper tray capacity when loading media. For more information, see Printer specifications. • Print quality decreases when printing on plain paper such as index cards. This is to be expected and does not indicate a problem. Printing on plain paper is useful for print jobs, such as drafts, where print quality is not important.

7 Maintenance This section contains basic maintenance procedures that can help keep your printer performing well and producing top-quality photos.
Chapter 7 View estimated ink levels You can view the estimated ink level of the print cartridge installed in the printer on the printer itself. The printer screen displays an ink-level icon that shows the approximate amount of ink remaining in the cartridge: NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays.

CAUTION: Check that you are using the correct print cartridges. Also, note that HP does not recommend modifying or refilling HP cartridges. Damage that results from modifying or refilling HP cartridges is not covered by the HP warranty. To insert or replace a print cartridge 1. Make sure the power is on and you have removed the cardboard from inside the printer. 2.
Chapter 7 5. Hold the replacement cartridge with the label on top. Slide the cartridge at a slight upward angle into the cradle so the copper-colored contacts go in first. Push the cartridge until it snaps into place. 6. Close the print cartridge door. 7. Follow the onscreen instructions. NOTE: Recycle the old cartridge. The HP Inkjet Supplies Recycling Program is available in many countries/regions and lets you recycle used print cartridges free of charge. For more information, go to www.hp.
Print a test page The information on a test page can be helpful if you need to contact HP support. It also contains information about ink levels, print or ink cartridge performance, printer serial number, and so on. To print a test page from the printer 1. Touch the Setup icon to display the Setup menu. For more information, see Setup Menu. 2. Touch Tools, and then touch Print Test Page.
Chapter 7 Follow these tips to help maintain HP print cartridges and ensure consistent print quality: • • Keep all unused print cartridges in their original sealed packages until they are needed. Store print cartridges at room temperature (15–35 degrees C or 59–95 degrees F). Do not remove the plastic tape covering the ink nozzles until you are ready to install the print cartridge in the printer. If the plastic tape has been removed from the print cartridge, do not attempt to reattach it.
8 Troubleshooting TIP: HP recommends using a USB cable 3 meters (10 feet) or less in length. Using a longer USB cable may cause errors. Pause or disable any active virus protection applications. Quit all software applications. Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the printer on. Reinstall the printer software according to the setup instructions that came with the printer.
The printer does not appear in Printers and Faxes (Windows only) Try the following solutions to resolve the issue. If the first solution does not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining solutions until the issue is resolved. Solution 1: Retry the installation Solution 2: Disable Software Install Mode Solution 1: Retry the installation Solution: Make sure the software is installed by verifying that there is HP Photosmart A640 series folder in the HP folder of the Windows Start menu.
Chapter 8 Solution 2: Make sure Software Install Mode is enabled Solution: Make sure Software Install Mode option is enabled in the printer menu. Troubleshooting To enable Software Install Mode 1. Touch the Setup icon to display the Setup menu. For more information, see Setup Menu. 2. Touch Preferences. 3. Touch Software Install Mode. 4. Make sure the On option is checked. 5. Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the printer back on. Cause: Software Install Mode might be off.
I want to attach the printer to my computer to transfer photos only, but the software installation program keeps appearing To disable Software Install Mode 1. Touch the Setup icon to display the Setup menu. For more information, see Setup Menu. 2. Touch Preferences. 3. Touch Software Install Mode. 4. Make sure Off is checked. 5. Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the printer back on. 6. Check to see if the printer appears in Printers and Faxes.
Chapter 8 Solution 1: Check the power cord Troubleshooting Solution: • The printer may be plugged into a power strip that is turned off. Turn on the power strip, and then turn on the printer. • The printer may be plugged into an incompatible power source. If you are traveling abroad, make certain the power source in the country/region you are visiting complies with the power requirements and power cord of the printer. • Check that the power adapter is functioning properly.
The printout did not appear Solution: Try the following steps to clear the paper jam: • If the paper came part way through the front of the printer, gently pull the paper towards you to remove it. • If the paper did not come part way through the front of the printer, try removing it from the back of the printer: ◦ Remove the paper from the input tray. ◦ Gently pull the jammed paper to remove it from the back of the printer.
Chapter 8 Solution 3: Make sure that the printer power cord is securely attached Solution: Make sure that the printer power cord is securely attached and the printer is turned on. Cause: The printer might not be connected to a power source. If this did not solve the issue, try the next solution. Troubleshooting Solution 4: Wait until USB hub is not busy and try printing again Solution: Wait until the other device is no longer being accessed or connect the printer directly to the computer.
Cause: Static electricity may have built up in the cable between the computer and printer. The software could not identify the printer because the printer-USB connection may be defective. The document or photo did not print using the selected default print settings Try the following solution for this problem. Solution: To select print settings 1. Open the file that you want to print. 2. Follow the steps for your operating system. Windows users a. Select File, and then select Print. b.
Chapter 8 The printer did not print borderless photos Try the following solution for this problem. Solution: Troubleshooting To turn on borderless printing when printing from the printer control panel 1. Touch the Setup icon to display the Setup menu. For more information, see Setup Menu. 2. Touch Preferences. 3. Touch Borderless. 4. Touch On to turn borderless printing on. To turn on borderless printing when printing from a computer 1. Verify that the printer is turned on. 2.
A blank page came out of the printer Try the following solution for this problem. Troubleshooting Solution: Print a test page. For more information, see Print a test page. Replace the print cartridge if necessary. For more information, see Insert or replace the print cartridge. Cause: The print cartridge may be depleted of ink.
