How to Read and Use HP-UX Reference Manuals
This section outlines the various sections of HP-UX reference manuals and manual
pages. After reading this section you should understand the content and organization
of the manual set and how to interpret a manual page.
Manual Organization
Following is a brief description of the HP-UX reference manual sections you typi-
cally use:
• Section 1 User Commands
• Section 1M System Administration Commands
• Section 2 System Calls
• Section 3 Subroutines and Subroutine Libraries
• Section 4 File Formats
• Section 9 Glossary
“User Commands” describes programs that are usually invoked directly by users.
Commands are listed alphabetically.
“System Administrative Commands” describes commands used for system mainte-
nance pertaining to system administrator and super-user tasks. Commands are listed
alphabetically.
“System Calls” describes HP-UX kernel entries. System calls are listed alphabeti-
cally.
“Subroutines and Subroutine Libraries” describes subroutines that exist in various
system libraries.
“File Formats” documents the structure of various types of files.
