4-18 Fault Isolation
The Test section of Self Test checks all system hardware that loads and executes a stan-
dalone program, such as the
• CPU
• I/O console (keyboard or terminal)
• SCSI storage devices
• Network controllers
Test runs automatically during Normal mode power-up, and from the TE command at
the MD prompt.
Before Test verifies any SCSI devices on the SCSI bus, it checks the SCSI controller
for proper operation. Test checks direct access media SCSI devices, which include
Winchester and HP magneto-optical drives, by invoking a diagnostic that resides on
the drive. Non-direct access media devices, such as tape and floppy drives, are not
tested. If the drive’s diagnostic passes, Test searches the drive for an Apollo PV label
to find the location of the drive’s reserved diagnostic logical blocks. Once it locates the
reserved blocks, Test performs a read test to them. If it does not find the PV label, it
displays “
pv label not found” on the display screen.
Test checks a network controller, which includes the integrated LAN controller on the
CPU board, by calling a diagnostic that resides in a PROM on the network controller.
Extended Test consists of all the Test diagnostics, plus tests that
• May query you
• Check external graphics controllers and devices
• Exceed the power up time length
Extended Test runs from the ET command at the MD prompt.
Continuous Test loops the extended test diagnostics until they report an error or you
press < RESET >. Continuous Test runs from the CT command at the MD prompt.
Test and Extended Test diagnostics for the following devices reside in the self_test file:
• SGC, ISA, and EISA buses
• SGC graphics controller boards
• VRX Monochrome (A1096A) and VRX Color (A1426A) controller boards
• Future system devices
