Uninterruptible Power Supply
Uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes) offer a measure of security for business-
critical systems. When a power failure occurs, a UPS can provide backup power for a
few minutes (to allow a graceful system shutdown) or up to several hours (to allow
uninterrupted service). UPS units are available in rack-mountable or freestanding
form.
Compaq strongly recommends that you use at least one UPS for the cluster. Choose a
UPS that has sufficient capacity to provide backup power to the entire cluster.
Compaq UPS systems, such as the R6000 or R3000, also provide integration with the
operating system through UPS power monitoring services. When a power loss
occurs, the UPS sends a signal to the servers to start a proper shutdown sequence.
This sequence can include notifying users of the imminent shutdown, as well as
shutting down all applications and the operating system itself.
Additionally, Compaq Power Management Software within Compaq Insight
Manager 7 allows system administrators to monitor and control Compaq UPS units
locally or remotely. This versatile application provides system administrators with an
overview of network power conditions and enables them to configure shutdown
timing, customize alert messages, and perform UPS diagnostic checks.
