Changing the Hard Drive Partition from File
Allocation Table to New Technology File
System
The operating system comes preinstalled on a File Allocation Table (FAT)
partition. You can change the hard drive partition to New Technology File
System (NTFS).
The conversion to NTFS is not necessary, but the conversion will provide a
higher level of security and better performance (depending on the applications
used).
For more information on NTFS, refer to the operating system documentation
or the Microsoft website.
CAUTION: This is a one-way conversion. You cannot convert the partition back
to FAT. Do not turn off the server or interrupt the conversion process because
interruptions can cause the data on the primary partition to be lost.
To start the irreversible conversion to NTFS, click Start, Programs, and
then Compaq System Tools. The partition cannot be converted back to
FAT unless you reinstall the operating system.
Creating an Emergency Repair Diskette
The Emergency Repair Disk Utility creates or updates the Emergency Repair
Diskette, which contains information on the current settings of the operating
system. If there is an operating system crash, this diskette restores the server to
the last-saved configuration stored on the Emergency Repair Diskette.
IMPORTANT: The Emergency Repair Diskette does not serve as a complete system
backup. Compaq recommends creating this diskette because it can be a helpful tool if a
system repair is needed. The Emergency Repair Diskette does not restore data; therefore,
use a tape backup solution for complete system backups.
To start the Emergency Repair Disk Utility, click Start, Programs, and
then Compaq System Tools.
Refer to the Windows NT documentation for more information on the
Emergency Repair Diskette.
