Review the blue, magenta, yellow, and black boxes on the diagnostics page. If you are seeing
streaks in the color and black boxes, or no ink in portions of the boxes, then automatically clean
the printhead.
i. Load Letter or A4 plain, white paper in the input tray.
ii. Open the HP printer software. For more information, see Open the HP printer software
(Windows).
iii. In the printer software, click Print & Scan, and then click Maintain Your Printer to access the
Printer Toolbox.
iv. From the Device Services tab, click the option to clean, and then follow the onscreen
instructions.
If cleaning the cartridges or printhead does not solve the problem, contact HP support. Go to
www.hp.com/support . This website provides information and utilities that can help you correct
many common printer problems. If prompted, select your country/region, and then click All HP
Contacts for information on calling for technical support.
c. To align the cartridges or printhead
NOTE: Aligning the printhead ensures the high-quality output. The printhead does not have to be
realigned when cartridges are replaced.
i. Load Letter or A4 plain, white paper in the input tray.
ii. Open the HP printer software. For more information, see Open the HP printer software
(Windows).
iii. In the printer software, click Print & Scan, and then click Maintain Your Printer to access the
Printer Toolbox.
iv. From the Device Service tab, click the option to align.
v. The printer prints an alignment sheet.
vi. Follow the instructions on the printer screen to align.
To improve print quality (OS X)
a. To print a diagnostics page
i. Load Letter or A4 plain, white paper in the input tray.
ii. Open HP Utility.
NOTE: HP Utility is located in the HP folder in the Applications folder.
iii. Select your printer from the list of devices at the left of the window.
iv. Click Test Page.
v. Click the Print Test Page button, and follow the onscreen instructions.
b. To clean the cartridges or printhead
i. Load Letter or A4 plain, white paper in the input tray.
ii. Open HP Utility.
NOTE: HP Utility is located in the HP folder in the Applications folder.
iii. Select your printer from the list of devices at the left of the window.
