Authenticating using a smart card reader
Multifunction printers with a smart card reader
1. Touch the button related to the function you need (such as Fax or Copy).
2. You see the message “Please insert your smart card…” on the MFP screen.
3. Locate the card reader attached to the printer. Fully insert your smart card in the card reader, and
using the touch screen keyboard on the MFP screen, type your card password when requested.
Please note that the Shift key on the touch screen panel toggles the entire keyboard between upper
and lower case. Touch OK when finished.
NOTE: If you insert an invalid card or if you insert your card incorrectly, the card reader light will
flash continuously.
4. The following two messages are displayed while the system verifies your identity: “Processing card,
please wait” and “Card validation, please wait.”
5. After you are authenticated, the printer screen displays your name at the top of the screen and you
are taken to your chosen function screen. You may remove your smart card after finishing all the
steps for a chosen secure printer function. Please note that you will be immediately logged out
when you remove your smart card. However, after authenticating, you can remove your card while
your jobs are being printed without stopping their release.
NOTE: An error message is displayed on the MFP screen if your smart card is not responding or if
your certificate is invalid or has been revoked. Please contact your system administrator and
communicate that message.
