Read Me First for ProCurve 2424M Gigabit Stacking Module C.06.06

Read Me First
Temporary Correction to the Installation Guide
The information in this Read Me First updates the information in the HP ProCurve Switch 2424M
Gigabit Stacking Module Installation Guide (part number J4130-90001). But, this information
applies only to the use of the HP ProCurve Switch 2424M Gigabit Stacking Module in HP ProCurve
Switch 2424M units that have operating system (OS) software version C.06.06 (the version that is
supplied with this module).
Summary: For Switch 2424M units that are running OS version C.06.06, the switch must be reset
after you change the transceiver type that is installed in one or both of the transceiver slots in the
Gigabit Stacking Module; for example, if you install a Gigabit Stacking Transceiver in a slot that was
previously occupied by a Gigabit-SX Transceiver or Gigabit-LX Transceiver. For the first time you
install transceivers in the module, you do not have to reset the switch.
Subsequent releases of the Switch 2424M OS will correct this condition and will obsolete this Read
Me First. The next OS release will be available by early Summer of 1999 on the HP ProCurve
Networking web site:

Hot Swap Operation
General Description. In Installation Guides for both the Gigabit Stacking Module and the Switch
2424M, the “hot swap” operation is described. Any module supported by the Switch 2424M, including
the Gigabit Stacking Module, can be installed into the switch or can be exchanged with another
module without having to power off the switch first. If this exchange involves changing module types,
though, (for example, installing a Gigabit Stacking Module in place of a Gigabit-SX module), the
switch does have to be reset in order to correctly identify and register the new module type. Please
see the Gigabit Stacking Module Installation Guide, page 10, for information on resetting the switch.
Hot Swapping the Gigabit Stacking Module for a Transceiver Change. For the Gigabit
Stacking Module, the intended design is that the module could be removed from the switch, the
transceiver types could be changed, and the module reinstalled without requiring a switch reset. This
is the behavior described in the product manuals.
For Switch 2424M units that have OS software version C.06.06, this feature could not be completely
implemented. For this software version, when you change the transceiver type in the Gigabit Stacking
Module, (for example, putting a Gigabit Stacking Transceiver in a slot that was previously occupied
by a Gigabit-SX Transceiver), and then reinstall the Gigabit Stacking Module, the switch will not
correctly identify the new transceiver type until it has been reset. Until the reset, the transceiver will
not be able to complete it’s network link.
