Mapping a VLAN to an MSTP instance
In MSTP mode, use this command to map a VLAN to an MTSP instance. You can group a set of
VLANs to an instance. This command can be used only after the VLAN is created. VLAN instance
mapping is removed from the configuration if the underlying VLANs are deleted.
To map a VLAN to an MSTP instance, perform the following steps from Privileged EXEC mode:
Specifying the maximum number of hops for a BPDU
In MSTP mode, use this command to configure the maximum number of hops for a BPDU in an
MSTP region. Specifying the maximum hops for a BPDU prevents the messages from looping
indefinitely on the interface. When you change the number of hops, it affects all spanning-tree
instances.
To configure the maximum number of hops for a BPDU in an MSTP region, perform the following
steps from Privileged EXEC mode:

1. Enter global configuration mode. switch>#config t

2. Enter MSTP mode. switch(config)#protocol spanning-tree
mstp
switch(conf-mstp)#
3. Map a VLAN to an MSTP instance. Syntax is as
follows:
• instance_id—The range is 1 through 15.
• vlan_id, vlan_string—The range is 1
through 3583.
• priority_id—The range is 0 through
61440. The priority values must be in
increments of 4096. The default is
32768.
switch(conf-mstp)#instance instance_id
{vlan vlan_string | vlan_id [priority
priority_id]}
4. Display the MSTP instance information. switch(conf-stp)#do show spanning-tree
mst instance instance_id

3. Configure the maximum number of hops for a
BPDU in an MSTP region. The range is 1
through 40. The default is 20 hops.
switch(conf-mstp)#max-hops hop_count
4. Display the MSTP configuration. switch(conf-stp)#do show spanning-tree
