HP 9100C Digital Sender - (English) Administration Guide

EN Using a Web server for user authentication 9
If the Web server cannot authenticate the user, access to the
digital sender is denied if you have enabled login. If you have
disabled login, then the user can use the digital sender and enter
any valid e-mail address.
Note For the greatest assurance that users are not sending e-mail and faxes
using someone elses name, you must enable login on all digital
senders.
Using the IIS Web server
Although you can use any Web server for authentication, Microsoft
®
Internet Information Services (IIS) contains a Web server useful for
user authentication. Because IIS and its Web server are integrated
into the Microsoft operating system, they are easy to use for
configuring authentication. IIS, which is part of the Microsoft Back
Office, is an option included with Windows
®
NT 4.0 Server edition,
Windows 2000 Server edition, and NT 4.0 Option Pack.
When authenticating users, the IIS Web server checks the user
account name and password against the user account database of
the local Windows NT or 2000 operating system and/or the NT
domain. This check is commonly referred to as NT user
authentication, or NTLM. Use the following directions to prepare the
IIS Web server to authenticate digital sender users.
Preparing the IIS Web server to work with digital
senders
In order for digital sender users to use Web-based authentication
against an NT domain or workgroup, the IIS administrator must
perform the following general steps. For more specific instructions for
working with IIS, see the documentation provided with IIS.
1 If Web-based authentication against an NT Domain is preferred,
choose a Windows NT 4.0 server or Windows 2000 server to host
the IIS. This server must be a Primary Domain Controller, Domain
member, or a member of a trusted Domain against which the
administrator wants to authenticate.
2 Install and setup IIS 5.0 for Windows 2000 or IIS 4.0 for Windows
NT 4.0 Server.
3 Open Internet Service Manager (IIS) and set up a home directory
or virtual directory for the IIS Web server in Default Web Site. It is
highly recommended that a home or virtual directory be created
just for the purpose of digital sender user authentication against
