Care of Cartridges and Drive
Head Cleaning
6-3
To clean the heads in stacker mode:
In stacker mode, you have control of when the heads are to be cleaned. Proceed
as follows:
1 Place the cleaning cartridge in one of the magazine slots (such as slot 1).
2 Insert the magazine into the autoloader.
3 Use the Select button to select the slot in which you placed the cleaning
cartridge.
4 Press the Load Cartridge button to load the cleaning cartridge into the drive.
The autoloader will then automatically perform a cleaning cycle.
At the end of the cleaning cycle, the changer mechanism automatically replaces
the cleaning cartridge in the magazine.
5 Press the Eject button to eject the magazine. Remove the cleaning cartridge.
6 Mark the label on the cleaning cartridge, so that you have a record of how many
times it has been used.
Note During a stacker mode backup, in which the autoloader automatically changes
cartridges as they are filled, if the next cartridge is a cleaning cartridge, the
drive will clean the heads as soon as the cartridge is loaded. When the cleaning
cycle is finished, the next cartridge will be loaded (if there is one) and the
backup will proceed.
Cleaning Cartridge Life
The cleaning cartridge uses a special tape to clean the tape heads. How long a
cleaning cartridge lasts depends on the length of the cleaning cycle. When the
cartridge runs out of cleaning tape, discard it and use a new one.
n If the Clean Me message still shows on the front panel after the heads
have been cleaned, the cleaning cartridge has probably run out of cleaning
tape.
n If you have software that makes use of the autoloaders TapeAlert facility,
this will warn you if the cleaning cartridge has expired.
