Common Questions and Answers
How often should I clean the drives tape heads?
Refer to Head Cleaning on page 6-2.
What should I avoid when positioning the autoloader?
Do not place the autoloader in a dirty environment, for example on the floor, or
near a door or walkway. Avoid locations subject to sudden temperature
changes, such as near an outside door or window.
Make sure that there is no possibility of loose toner from a laser printer or
photocopier coming near the autoloader. Its magnetic and low fusion
temperature make it particularly hazardous to tape drives.
How many times can I use a DDS cartridge?
The recommended maximum number of tape passes is 2000. We recommend a
safe practical maximum of 100 complete backups. See Maximizing Tape Life
on page 6-6 for more details.
What tape cartridges can I use?
For optimal performance, use only HP DDS-3 (125m) tape cartridges. The
autoloader can also read and write in DDS-2 format to DDS-2 (120m) cartridges,
and in DDS-1 format to DDS-1 (60m and 90m) cartridges. Only use Media
Recognition System cartridges with DDS logos on themsee Maximizing Tape
Life on page 6-6 for details.
For how long can I archive tapes?
Thirty years is the maximum recommended storage time for DDS cartridges.
Can I do more than one backup to a cartridge?
Yes, if your backup utility allows you to. Consult the documentation with your
backup software for instructions.
