HP StorageWorks Fabric Manager 5.x Administrator Guide (AA-RUQSF-TE, September 2005)

60 Discovering and customizing fabrics
Renaming a device node and device port
Device nodes and device ports are identified using WWN and SCSI inquiry or custom names that are
unique and meaningful. You can rename devices by:
Using zone aliases
Importing names from a comma-separated value (.csv) file
Importing FDMI host names
You can rename device node and device port names from the Device Node and Device Port tables or from
the At-A-Glance view for the device.
Using zone aliases
You can name devices using zone aliases by placing a WWN in a zone alias and then defining the name
you want. Subsequently, the device is identified using the name of the alias in which it was placed, using
the zone alias as the name of the device.
Before you rename a device node or port using a zone alias, note the following:
If an alias contains more than one member and one or more of those members is not a WWN, the
alias is ignored.
If an alias contains more than one member and all members are WWNs, an _x string is appended to
the alias, where x is an incrementing number.
If a WWN is contained in multiple aliases, one of the aliases is selected at random.
An import operation overrides current names for devices.
The names are global to the Fabric Manager server and they apply to the Device Node and Device
Ports for all fabrics on that Fabric Manager server.
The Name value is stored in a different table from the Device Node and Device Port information. This
allows the device to exit the fabric and return without losing the user-configured name.
The name defaults to www-symbolicName-role or www-SCSIInquiryName-role where role
is: initiator, target, both, or unknown.
You can name devices using zone aliases with the Device Name Import wizard, as described in
Renaming a device node or port” on page 61. In the second step of the wizard, select Zone Alias Import.
The wizard reports the names that are imported or skipped, and which names are duplicates.
Importing names from a .csv file
When importing from a .csv file, Fabric Manager first parses the file for errors. If any invalid data is
found, an alert box asks you whether to skip the invalid lines and continue the import process.
The format for the .csv file is:
WWN, name, comment
For example:
10:00:00:00:00:00:00:00, test_node, device node for testing purposes only
The parser ignores anything from the second comma to the end of the line.
Import names from a .csv file using the Device Name Import wizard, as described in ”Renaming a device
node or port” on page 61. In the second step of the wizard, select CSV File Import.
Importing FDMI host names
You can import FDMI host names as device port names. All FDMI host names and their WWNs that are
currently in the device port database table for the selected fabric are imported. Device port names that
match the WWN are renamed to the corresponding host name.
Because the host name is only at the device port level, this approach typically renames only device port
names. However, some device nodes might have the same WWN, and they are renamed as well.
You import FDMI host names using the Device Name Import wizard, described in “Renaming a device
node or port,” next. In the second step of the wizard, select FDMI Host name Import.
