7 Monitoring alerts and events
This chapter provides information about the alerts and events generated in Fabric Manager. The Alerts
view in Fabric Manager provides a unified list of all of the alerts for any element you are monitoring.
The Events view provides a list of events for the element selected from the SAN Elements tab. Fabric events
are displayed at the fabric, switch, and switch group levels.

Monitoring alerts
Alerts are Fabric Manager-specific events that are stored in the Fabric Manager database. For example, if
a switch is rebooting while data collection is being performed, an alert appears in the Fabric Manager
Alerts view saying that the switch is unreachable. However, when that switch has finished booting and
data collection occurs again, the Alerts table is queried and the previous status of switch unreachable is
changed to resolved.
All alerts, regardless of status, remain in the Alerts view (see Figure 37) until you delete them.
Unacknowledged and unresolved alert information is displayed in bold type in the Alerts view. When a
fabric is deleted from Fabric Manager, any alerts generated by the fabric or its member switches are
deleted from the Fabric Manager database as well. Fabrics and switches with associated alerts have an
alerts icon displayed next to the fabric or switch icon in the SAN Elements tab and the At-A-Glance
window for that element.
Identifying alerts
Any switches and fabrics with unacknowledged or unresolved alerts (either Critical or Warning level) or
severity levels are easy to identify in the Fabric Manager GUI:
Icons are displayed in the SAN Elements tab next to the switch or fabric names and their associated
icons for any switches and fabrics that have unacknowledged or unresolved alerts that are at the
Critical or Warning severity levels. If a switch has a Critical or Warning alert, the appropriate icon is
also displayed at the fabric level of that switch.
Icons are displayed in the At-A-Glance windows (in the Overview view) next to the switch or fabric
icons for the switches and fabrics that have unacknowledged or unresolved alerts that are Critical or
Warning.
The Alerts view (Figure 37) displays all alerts for all switches and fabrics monitored by Fabric Manager.
