Parameter
cipher: Sets the authentication mode to cipher text. The password displays as
encrypted text if you use this option.
simple: Sets the authentication mode to plain text. The password must be in
plain text. A plain text password is a sequential character string of no more than
16 digits, for example, 3Com918
password: Enter the required password text.
Description
Use the set authentication password command to configure the password
for local authentication.
Use the undo set authentication password command to cancel local
authentication password.
The password in plain text is required when performing authentication, regardless
of whether the configuration is plain text or cipher text.
By default, a password is required for users connecting over Modem or Telnet. If a
password has not been set, the following prompt is displayed: password
required, but none set.
Example
To configure the local authentication password on VTY 0 to 3Com, enter the
following:
[SW7700-ui-vty0]set authentication password simple 3com

Description
Use the shell command to enable the terminal service for a user interface. The
terminal service is enabled by default. Use the
undo shell command to disable
the terminal service for a user interface.
When using the undo shell command, note the following points.
For reasons of security, the undo shell command can only be used on user
interfaces other than the AUX user interface.
