HP Application Recovery Manager software A.06.10 Concepts guide (March 2008)

Backup system
It is the system to which a replica is presented after it is created, so it is the system
by which the replica can be accessed for subsequent processing, whether or not the
data contained in it is to be backed up to tape. It also performs various checks and
administration functions.
The backup system must have a relevant Application Recovery Manager ZDB Agent
installed. In some cases, it may also require an Application Integration Agent.
Generally, the backup system should not be the same as the application system.
ZDB database
The ZDB database is an extension to the Application Recovery Manager internal
database (IDB) on the Cell Manager. It holds array-specific information about replicas
needed for instant recovery purposes.
The ZDB database has a separate section for each array that supports ZDB+IR within
Application Recovery Manager:
XPDB for HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP
SMISDB for HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array
Additionally, a separate section contains operating system information such as file
system or volume management configurations:
SYSDB
The exact information stored in the ZDB depends on the array. Generally speaking,
each section contains the following types of information:
Information on replicas kept on disk arrays such as backup session IDs, source
volumes used in the backup session, and so on.
LDEVs (on XP) or replicas (on EVA) excluded from the replica rotation scheme
and other use.
Additional configuration information such as recorded XP command devices (on
XP) and defining disk group pair relationships (on EVA).
This information is written to the ZDB database whenever a replica is created, and
is deleted from the database whenever a replica is deleted.
The sections of the ZDB database and their use are fully described in the HP
Application Recovery Manager software administrator's guide.
