HP 9000 rp8400 server Upgrade and SBA Cable Installation
NOTE This section describes the installation of the shrouds and SBA cables between the Server
Expansion Unit and the HP 9000 rp8400 server.
For connection of the Server Expansion Unit to the HP Integrity rx8620 server or the HP 9000
rp8420 server, see “HP Integrity rx8620 server and HP 9000 rp8420 server SBA Cable
Installation” on page 62.
INSTALLATION NOTES BEFORE GETTING STARTED
Before attaching the Server Expansion Unit, the HP 9000 rp8400 server must be shut down. Schedule
this with the customer prior to beginning the Server Expansion Unit installation.
The Server Expansion Unit is only supported with servers containing a minimum of three cell boards.
The cell boards must be loaded in the server in cell board slots 0, 1, and 2. Cell board slot 0 is the top-most
slot in the server chassis.
The Server Expansion Unit ships with both core I/O cards installed. Next to the core I/O card, in the top
slot, is the manageability I/O expander link located to the right of the core I/O card. A cable is supplied to
connect to the server for the manageability link between the server and the Server Expansion Unit.
If the server does not have the A7109A core I/O cards like those installed in the Server Expansion Unit,
the server core I/O cards must be upgraded before connecting the server to the Server Expansion Unit.
The A7109A core I/O card can be identified by looking near the local console port. If a MP FAULT LED
and a MP SEL LED are seen, then you have the A7109A core I/O cards already installed in the server. If
not seen, then this is an older core I/O card that must be replaced. After installing new A7109A core I/O
cards in the server, obtain a copy of the rp8400/rp7410/rp7405 and Server Expansion Unit (SEU)
Firmware Update Release Notice V6.0 (or later) and verify the A7109A core I/O cards have the latest
FPGA and MP revisions as listed in the release notice.
IMPORTANT If the igelan and c8xx drivers are not already in the kernel, they must be added before
installing the A7109A core I/O cards in the HP 9000 rp8400 server.
If the server only has one core I/O card installed, another core I/O card must be installed in the server to
support the Server Expansion Unit.
When the Server Expansion Unit is installed in the same rack cabinet as the server, the Server
Expansion Unit must be mounted directly above the server. This could require moving existing products
to another rack cabinet.
When the Server Expansion Unit is installed in an adjacent rack to the server, adhere to the following
guidelines for installation:
Two SEUs can be installed in a single rack with proper anti-tip feet, system interlock rod, and ballast.
The two racks must be secured together with rack tie kits and the rear doors must be removed. The
racks must be either 41U or 33U. A 25U rack is not permitted for SEU installation.
The top of the SEU must be at the same level as the top of the host server to allow for a complete
service loop accomplished by routing the cable out the back of one rack into the back of the other rack
so both the host server and the SEU can be fully extended in the locked position simultaneously.
