9 One-Boot Flash Update Utility
This section describes the process for updating the BIOS and firmware (BMC, FRU, and SDR) on a managed
server while the operating system is running. After the update has completed, the next system reset
activates the newly updated BIOS and /or firmware. For installation instructions for this utility, refer to
Installing the One-Boot Flash Update Utility on page 21.
The One-Boot Flash Update Utility runs on Windows 2000 AS, Windows 2003 AS, and on Red Hat Linux8.0
systems. It is launched from a command prompt in both operating systems. The new images of BIOS and
firmware (BMC and SDR) are loaded into secondary flash memory and are not used until the next system
reset occurs. (The utility sets the BIOS and firmware update notification flags when the BIOS and/or
firmware have been successfully updated.) After a system reset, the newly installed BIOS and/or firmware
is validated and activated. If validation fails, the update will be cancelled and the current version will be
restored and used. When FRU firmware is updated, the update is performed in real time on the current
version. Restoration of the previous version of FRU firmware is not possible.
The One-Boot Flash Update Utility expects a configuration (CFG) file to be present in the location specified
by the <ULR or path> argument supplied when the utility is started. (The default name of this file is
flashpoint, cfg.) The location of this file must be the same as the location of files used in the update. The
CFG file is a text file that contains information about the update files,
The One-Boot Flash Update Utility can be executed remotely via a secure network connection using a Telnet
Client and Terminal Services under Windows or using a Telnet Client and Remote Shell under Linux.
