Introduction to XP Command View AE Device
Manager
21
Server
The Device Manager server communicates with HP StorageWorks storage systems. In
addition, the Device Manager server manages client connections with the Device Manager web
client and Device Manager agents using the http protocol. The Device Manager agent and
Device Manager server can be installed on the same host machine.
Web client
The Device Manager web client is a web-based user interface for monitoring and managing HP
StorageWorks storage systems. It communicates with and runs as a client of the Device
Manager server. For further information on Device Manager web client, see the HP
StorageWorks XP Command View Advanced Edition software Device Manager user guide.
Command Line Interface (CLI)
The Device Manager CLI enables you to perform client operations by issuing commands from
the system command-line prompt. For further information on the command-line interface, see
the HP StorageWorks XP Command View Advanced Edition software Device Manager CLI
user guide.
Agent
Device Manager agents run on host computers that are attached to HP StorageWorks storage
systems under management by the Device Manager. The agent collects data on the
configuration and utilization of the attached storage and sends this information to the Device
Manager server. For further information on the Device Manager agent, see the HP
StorageWorks XP Command View Advanced Edition software Device Manager agent
installation and configuration guide. The Device Manager agent and the Device Manager
server can be installed on the same host machine.
1-2 Device Manager licenses
Device Manager provides the following two licenses:
Full license:
A full license is required to use all Device Manager functions. The three types of full licenses
are permanent, temporary, and emergency.
Core CLI/SMI-S license:
The Core CLI/SMI-S license enables you to use only storage management functions that use
SMI-S or Device Manager CLI. With the Core CLI/SMI-S license, you cannot use storage
management functions that use web clients.
This section describes the differences in available functions between a full license and Core
CLI/SMI-S license, and the setup procedure when using Device Manager with the Core CLI/SMI-S
license.
1-2-1 Functions available with the Core CLI/SMI-S license
This subsection describes the Device Manager functions available with the Core CLI/SMI-S license.
