HP Insight Virtualization Manager with Logical Server Management 6.1 User Guide

1. Identify the system using Systems Insight Manager.
2. Check the Host VM status in Systems Insight Manager.
3. Unregister the host, then register it again.
4. When the VM status is green, refresh VMM resources using the ToolsLogical
ServersRefresh... menu selection.
For more information, see the HP Insight Control virtual machine management documentation
at www.hp.com/go/insightdynamics/docs.
Failure during VM deletion leaves active but unpowered logical server
The deletion of a VM requires that it be registered; therefore, part of the delete operation is to
register the VM.
If a VM failure occurs during the interval between registration and actual deletion, when the
VM is restarted, logical server management sees a registered VM and marks the associated logical
server as active.
After the failure, the delete job appears to be incomplete, and the logical server is active, but not
powered on.
Suggested Action
1. Refresh VMM server resources using the ToolsLogical ServersRefresh... menu
selection.
2. Deactivate the logical server using the ToolsLogical ServersDeactivate... menu
selection.
3. Repeat the delete operation using the DeleteDelete Logical Server... menu selection.
Ensure VM Hosts use fully qualified host names
Activating and moving virtual machine logical servers requires that the VM Host is identified
by its fully qualified DNS name or the host name in HP SIM.
If the VM host is not identified by its fully qualified name, the VM Host may not appear as a
valid target when dragging and dropping a logical server onto another host, or it may not be
properly identified in HP SIM.
Suggested Action Use the OptionsDiscovery... menu selection in HP SIM to perform a
manual HP SIM discovery on the host name before you begin operations on ESX virtual machine
logical servers.
VM Hosts must be in same vCenter for ESX virtual machine logical server
moves
To move logical servers from one VM Host to another, the VM Hosts must be members of the
same VMware vCenter. Additionally, you can move ESX virtual machine logical servers among
multiple clusters, as long as the clusters are contained in one vCenter.
VM displayed without association in Virtualization Manager perspectives
after deactivation
When you deactivate a virtual machine logical server, the virtual machine is unregistered from
the VM Host. The virtual machine is then displayed without an association in Virtualization
Manager perspectives. This is expected behavior.
If you view the virtual machine using the HP SIM System tab, you may see a message stating
that the VM is unregistered from the VM Host, and to register the VM using the native
virtualization console.
