HP Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM) version 2.1 User Guide

2 Getting started with SPM
Installing SPM
SPM is installed as part of the HP Matrix OE solution. You must have Microsoft® .NET 4.0 installed
on the Central Management Server to use the SPM software. See HP Insight Management Installation
and Configuration Guide for more information.
Upgrading from SPM v1.x
At the end of the SPM 2.1 installation, if an SPM 1.x catalog exists, SPM attempts to automatically
convert it to an SPM 2.1 catalog. If upgrading goes well, all resources in the old catalog are
imported into the new catalog, including storage arrays, volumes, and networks. Storage services
present in the old catalog are created and activated in the new catalog.
Under some circumstances, some managed resources in an SPM 1.x catalog may become
unmanaged in the SPM 2.1 catalog that is created by the upgrade process. This may occur, for
example, if the management interfaces for these resources are unavailable during the upgrade
process. The SPM log file contains notifications regarding these cases. Users may need to update
software on their arrays or other resources before removing the unmanaged resources from SPM
2.1 and re-importing them as managed resources if this happens.
Network connectivity was handled in SPM 1.x using SAN IDs. Unmanaged networks are constructed
for each SAN ID in the SPM 1.x catalog. If proxy WWNs are in use, the user must manually add
these to the appropriate unmanaged network in order for SPM to properly determine network
connectivity.
Any resources that were unmanaged in SPM 1.x remain unmanaged in SPM 2.1. The upgrade
utility does not attempt to transform unmanaged resources (for example, an unmanaged 3PAR
array) into managed SPM 2.1 resources because the SPM 1.x catalog does not contain the
credentials to manage unmanaged resources. If the resources are manageable in SPM 2.1 and
the end user desires that SPM manage them, the end user must modify the resources to make them
manageable.
The upgrade process may make other minor changes to the data contained in the SPM 1.x catalog.
Changes that may occur are described in the following list:
In SPM 1.x, endpoints could be specified in multiple SANs. In SPM 2.1, an endpoint can be
specified in only one SAN. If the upgrade utility encounters endpoints specified in multiple
SANs, it places them in only one SAN, randomly chosen from the SANs containing the endpoint
in the SPM 1.x catalog.
The upgrade utility tries to re-activate the storage services (called storage profiles in SPM 1.x).
It is possible that some storage services are not resourced. It is also possible that some of the
services are resourced but nonconformant. It is up to the user to modify these services to make
them resourced and conformant.
All upgraded resources belong to the Matrix Security Group.
All upgraded storage services use the HP Matrix Default Storage Template.
Any presentation requirements included in v1.x that are unused are removed during the
upgrade process.
NOTE: The upgrade process may take a long time, possibly tens of minutes, during which SPM
will not be usable.
