4 Storage service policy
SPM allows storage architects to control storage service provisioning policy using templates.
Templates dictate the types of requirements that consumers are allowed to or must add to any
storage service that is based on the template. Templates can also contain read-only and default
requirements that are automatically added to services.
Templates have the ability to prohibit selected requirements from being specified by storage services.
This allows the storage architect to pre-specify important characteristics and not let the consumer
influence them. In conjunction with access control, this allows the storage architect to have tight
control of storage service provisioning without having to be directly involved with every request.
Managing templates
Storage architects are able to perform the following operations on templates by default:
• Create new template
• Modify existing template (the user is prompted as to whether or not to change existing services
based on the template)
• Modify template requirements on an existing storage service
• Delete a template (a template cannot be deleted if there are existing storage services based
on it)
Storage architects and admins can perform the following operations on templates:
• Add or remove templates to/from a security group
• View template details/contents
• View all services based on a template
• View template of a service
Creating templates
Template creation is the responsibility of the storage architect. All created templates must have a
parent template from which they inherit their basic properties. The parent template must be chosen
when the template is created. Newly-created templates may be created by copying an existing
template, in which case they have the same parent template as the copied template.
During the creation process the user is prompted to provide requirements for the template.
NOTE: SPM ships with a default Matrix OE template that is used for Matrix storage provisioning.
This is used for manually specified requests (e.g. manually defining a storage pool entry using
SPM catalog storage or manually specifying the attributes of a logical disk when defining a Matrix
service template.) In addition, an architect defining the logical disk information in a Matrix service
template can browse other SPM storage templates and make a selection. The storage architect
can control Matrix storage provisioning by directly editing the default Matrix template, creating
new templates from the default template, or creating copies of the default template and then making
appropriate modifications.

To create a template:
1. In the Navigation tree, under Storage Services, select Templates.
The Templates page appears in the content pane. Any existing templates and their descriptions
are visible.
