HP B6000 Capacity Upgrade Booklet (EJ022-90938, June 2012)

The HP B6000 Capacity Upgrade Kit consists of two
12-drive disk array enclosures that are connected to
the base couplet to increase the storage space
available. You can add up to three capacity upgrade
kits to a single couplet.
Important guidelines before you start
The HP B6000 Backup System is designed and cabled
to support autonomic failover. This means that storage
is shared across a couplet and any activity that affects
storage must be balanced across both nodes in a
couplet.
You can install the capacity upgrade kit while the
system is online. However, HP recommends
discovering and adding the storage during a quiet
period of backups and replication. Depending
on the configuration, it can take up to four hours
to complete and performance will be slower
during that time.
Both nodes in the couplet must be running in a
normal state. Storage cannot be expanded if one
of the nodes is in a failover state. To check the
status look at the B6200 StoreOnce page on the
GUI; it contains a list of all the configured service
sets and their current status. If both service sets
for a couplet are running on the same Current
Node, one of the nodes has failed over. See the
HP StoreOnce B6000 Backup System User Guide
for more information about failover and failback.
Storage expansion shelves must be added as a
pair, one shelf to each node in a couplet.
Expansion will fail if you add two shelves to one
node and leave the other node in the couplet
without any additional storage. Similarly, you
cannot add one shelf to a node in one couplet
and the other shelf to a node in a different
couplet.
If you are using multiple capacity upgrade kits,
add all the shelves at the same time. This ensures
that all the storage can be discovered and added
at the same time.
Once the storage has been added, it cannot be
removed without destroying the couplet's
filesystem.
IMPORTANT: Disks are RAID parity initialized.
It should not be necessary to remove the disks
when installing the Capacity Upgrade Kit.
However, if disks are removed, they MUST be
returned to the same physical slots.
