Overview
This document describes how to upgrade the HP DC
SAN Backbone Director Switch to an HP SN8000B
8-slot SAN Backbone Director and the HP DC04 SAN
Director Switch to an HP SN8000B 4-slot SAN Director.
For additional information, see the HP SAN DC and
DC04 Director Switch to an HP SN8000B 8-slot and
4-slot Director Switch Upgrade Guide.
Time and items required
The migration procedure can take from 30 minutes to
over two hours, depending on how many upgrade tasks
have been done.
NOTE: You must upgrade from DCFM to HP
B-series Network Advisor to ensure manageability
of the Fabric OS 7.x hardware once the chassis
is upgraded to one of the SN8000B Directors.
The following items are required for the procedure:
ESD grounding strap
#2 Phillips screwdriver
Workstation computer
Serial cable, crossover Ethernet cable, or
management network access to the chassis
(recommended for monitoring)
IP address of an FTP server for backing up the
backbone configuration
IP address of an FTP server from which to download
new versions of the Fabric OS firmware or a
Brocade USB device from which to download a
new version of the Fabric OS firmware
Core blades CR16-8 for the HP DC SAN Backbone
Director Switch and CR16-4 for the HP DC04 SAN
Director Switch
Port blades compatible with Fabric OS 7.0.0 or
later:
FC16-32FC8-64
FC8-32E (Fabric OS 7.0.1 min)FC16-48
FC8-48E (Fabric OS 7.0.1 min)
16 Gbps SFP+ transceivers compatible with new
blades
Filler panels if any slots are to be left open
Upgrading the DC or DC04 Director switch
chassis to an SN8000B chassis
Before you begin the upgrade process, record your
chassis configuration in case the upgrade fails. See the
Fabric OS Command Reference Guide for details on the
commands shown.
NOTE: When facing the port side of the
SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Backbone Director and the
HP DC SAN Backbone Director, the slots are
numbered 1 through 12 from left to right. For the
SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director and the HP DC04
SAN Director, the slots are numbered 1 through
8 from bottom to top. CP blades reside in slots 6
and 7 for the SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Backbone
Director and the HP DC SAN Backbone Director
Switch and in slots 4 and 5 for SN8000B 4-Slot
SAN Director Switch and the HP DC04 SAN
Director Switch.
1. Enter the fosconfig --show command to
determine whether virtual fabrics are enabled.
If virtual fabrics are enabled, enter the
configupload -vf command followed by
the configupload -all command, which
uploads the backbone virtual fabric data.
Record the IP addresses assigned to the logical
switches.
If virtual fabrics are not enabled, enter the
configupload -all command, which
uploads the backbone configuration.
2. Record the cabling information.
3. Enter the slotshow command to display the blades
that reside in the chassis.
4. Enter the switchshow command to display slot,
port, and index information for the chassis.
5. Enter the prtcfgshow command to display port
configurations, and then record the settings so that
you can reconfigure ports after the upgrade.
Quiescing traffic on the chassis
All traffic on the chassis to be upgraded must be ended
or rerouted. Before you upgrade, perform controlled
failovers to alternate servers or paths.
Recording critical backbone information
Back up the backbone configuration before you upgrade
a CP blade. See the Fabric OS Administrator’s Guide
for backup information. This information is critical if
emergency recovery must be performed.
1. Connect to the chassis and log in to the active CP
blade as the admin user.
2. Enter the haShow command to determine which CP
blade is active.
3. Enter the firmwareShow command to get the
firmware version of the active CP blade.
4. Enter the licenseIdShow and licenseShow
commands to show the license key and all the
licenses installed on the chassis.
5. Upload the configuration if you have not already
done so. Execute step 1 under the Upgrading DC
or DC04 Director switch chassis to an SN8000B
chassis.
Preparing for the upgrade
The firmware level must be brought up to at least Fabric
OS 7.0.0 or later before making the final upgrade to
16 Gbps performance. If you are installing the Enhanced
8 Gbps port blades (FC8-32E and FC8-48E), you must
upgrade to Fabric OS 7.0.1 or later.
Upgrading the DC and DC04 SAN Director to 16
Gbps performance
1. Enter the firmwaredownload command to
upgrade from Fabric OS 6.4.x to 7.0.x. If you have
a version of Fabric OS earlier than 6.4.x, you
should upgrade first to 6.4.x and then to 7.0.x.
2. Enter the haShow command and verify that the
command output includes HA Enabled,
Heartbeat Up. If it is not yet enabled, reenter the
command until you have verified that redundancy
is achieved.
3. Enter the licenseShow command to confirm that
all the licenses originally installed on the chassis
are still valid. Compare the results to the results of
the licenseShow command you ran before the
upgrade.
4. Enter the firmwareShow command to verify that
the firmware version has been updated and that
the versions are the same on the two CP blades and
any application blades in the chassis.
Replacing the core blades
When the Fabric OS upgrade is complete, replace the
core blades. To do this, first use the sysShutdown
command to power down the chassis.
Remove CR8 and CR4S-8 core blades:
