Use these instructions to set up the HP SN8000B 4-Slot
SAN Director as a standalone unit.
These instructions provide basic configuration steps. For
detailed rack mount and configuration instructions, see
the HP SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director Switch Hardware
Reference Guide and the Brocade Fabric OS
Administrator's Guide 7.0.0 available on the HP Manuals
website at http://www.hp.com/support/manuals. From

Installation requirements
To set up the director for the first time, you will need:
• At least two people to safely slide the director from
one surface to another.
• #2 Phillips screwdriver.
• Pallet jack.
• Hydraulic lift or assisted lift, able to raise to a
minimum of 140 cm (55 in) with a minimum capacity
of 113 kg (250 lb).
• Power cables and serial cable (included in the
accessory kit).
• Workstation with a serial port or terminal server port
and a terminal emulator application (such as
HyperTerminal).
• Fiber optic cables and cable ties.
• Three Ethernet IP addresses.
• Ethernet cabling for Telnet access (optional).
• Optical transceivers (optional). Order the optical
transceivers from HP.
For information about supported tranceivers, see the
HP SPOCK website at http://www.hp.com/storage/
spock. You must sign up for an HP Passport to gain
access.
Verify the operating environment
• Ensure that the installation location is 9 rack units
(9U) high and 61.19 cm (24.09 in) deep to install
the director. 1U is equal to 4.45 cm (1.75 in).
• Plan for cable management. Manage cables by
routing them through the cable management fingers.
Do not place the director on the floor because doing
so impedes cable management and routing.
• Air-intake and exhaust vents must have a minimum
of 5 cm (2 in) of clearance.
• The air temperature on the air-intake side must be
less than 40ºC (104ºF) during operation.
• Dedicated electrical branch circuits must meet the
following requirements:
◦ 200–240 VAC, 47–63 Hz (nominal: 50–60 Hz)
(two branch circuits)
◦ Circuit breaker protection in accordance with local
electrical codes
◦ Supply circuit, line fusing, and wire size adequate
for the electrical rating on the chassis nameplate
◦ Grounded outlets installed by a licensed
electrician and compatible with the power cords
Unpack and verify carton contents
WARNING! Use safe lifting practices when
moving the product. A fully populated HP SN8000B
4-Slot SAN Director (with four port blades) weighs
approximately 68 kg (150 lb) and requires a
hydraulic or assisted lift to install.
The SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director packaging does not
include a wood pallet and pallet brackets. The chassis sits
on top of a plastic shipping tray.
1. Remove the upper portion of the shipping crate.
a. Cut the bands around the packaging.
b. Lift the carton off the chassis. Leave the packing
foam on top of the chassis to hold the kits in
place during transfer to the installation location.
Save the shipping carton for future use.
c. Leave the chassis on top of the plastic shipping
tray.
2. Verify the carton contents. See Table 1 (page 2).
3. Use a pallet jack or other lift to transport the chassis
to the installation area. Doorways must be wider than
91 cm (36 in).
4. Remove the port-side exhaust kit, accessory kit,
packing foam, and antistatic plastic from the chassis.
5. Remove the chassis door.
6. Remove the vertical cable management finger
assemblies. See Figure 2 (page 1).
7. Position the lift at the installation location and lock
the wheels of the lift.
8. Use the lift to raise the chassis to the correct level for
installation. If you are installing the chassis in a rack,
follow the instructions provided in the rack kit, or in
the HP SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director Switch
Hardware Reference Guide available on the HP
website at http://www.hp.com/support/manuals.
9. Gently slide the chassis onto the installation surface,
ensuring that it remains supported during the transfer.
10. Orient the chassis so that the nonport side has access
to intake air.
11. Reinstall the vertical cable management fingers.
12. Reinstall the chassis door.
