1 SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director overview This chapter provides an overview of the Director. Features Key features of the SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director include: • Up to 192 16 Gb/s external ports in a single chassis, enabling high density SAN configurations with reduced footprint • Support for 4, 8, 10, and 16 Gb/s autosensing Fibre Channel ports Trunking technology groups up to eight ports to create high performance 128 Gb/s ISL trunks between switches.
NOTE: HP highly recommends that you mount the chassis with the air intake (nonport side) mounted towards the cool air aisle, not towards the aisle where heated exhaust air comes from other components. • Up to four hot-swappable Director blade assemblies can be configured in a single chassis, delivering up to 192 16 Gb/s FC ports. • Two slots for CP blades (CP8): • • • ◦ A single active CP8 blade can control all FC ports in the chassis.
NOTE: The 8 Gb/s SFP+ and mSFP transceivers autonegotiate at 2, 4, and 8 Gb/s. The 16-Gb/s SFP+ transceivers autonegotiate at 4, 8, and 16 Gb/s. The 10 Gb/s speeds must be manually set and require special 10 Gb/s SFP+ transceivers. ◦ QSFP-based ICL cabling running at 64 Gb/s (four 16 Gb/s clustered in a single quad connector and cable). • All blades are serviced from the port side of the Director. Blowers, power supplies, and power cables are serviced from the nonport side.

Director blades Table 1 (page 14) describes the Director, CP blades, and core switch blades that are available for the SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director. • Status LEDs • Predictive diagnostics analysis through Fabric Watch • SNMP (including version 3) integration with higher-layer managers • Vertical cable management fingers Software features Fabric OS allows any FC-compliant device to attach to the switches as long as it conforms to the device login, name service, and related FC standards. Each operating environment requires that an FC HBA be available with a standards-compliant driver for correct interface to the fabric.

2 SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director installation This chapter provides information for installing a Director. You can set up and install the Director: • As a standalone unit on a flat surface • In a 19-inch EIA cabinet, using the Rack Mount Kit and port side exhaust kit (provided). Time and items required for installation Table 5 (page 20) describes the main installation and setup tasks and the estimated installation time, based on a fully populated SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director (four FC port blades).
Site preparation and unpacking the Director IMPORTANT: 132). This section provides instructions for installing a SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director in a 48.26-cm (19-inch) EIA cabinet using the port-side exhaust kit for cabinets with rail-to-rail depth of 68.58 to 78.74 cm (27 to 31 inch). CAUTION: Use safe lifting practices when moving the Director.

The location shown in Figure 5 (page 25) is an example. The shelf and Director can be installed anywhere in the cabinet that has 9U of space available. Figure 5 Clip and retainer nut locations on cabinet rails 3. Install the shelf. a. You can adjust the shelf to a length of 68.58 to 78.74 cm (27 to 31 inch) to accommodate the cabinet size.
4. Install the air-duct assembly by inserting it down into the side slot on the shelf. Ensure that the tabs of the assembly align and engage with the slots in the shelf. See Figure 7 (page 26).
5. Secure the top-rail assembly (A in Figure 4 (page 24)) to the air-duct assembly. See Figure 8 (page 27). a. You can adjust the top-rail assembly to a length of 68.58 to 78.74 cm (27 to 31 inch) to accommodate the cabinet size. To lengthen or shorten the top-rail assembly, loosen the two 6-32 screws (I-3 in Figure 4 (page 24)) and adjust the top-rail assembly to the desired length. The length will be approximately the length of the adjustable shelf.
NOTE: The screws, clip nuts, and retainer nuts used to secure the Director to the cabinet are provided in the SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director hardware accessory kit. To install the SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director in the cabinet: 1. Remove the chassis door from the Director. See “Removing the chassis door” (page 63). 2. Use a lift to raise the chassis to the correct level. Position the lift as close as possible to the rack. 3. If applicable, lock the wheels on the lift. 4.
2. Install both side plates using the ten 6-32 panhead screws supplied with the kit. NOTE: The left and right side plates are different. The left side and right side plates are marked “A” and “B” respectively. See Figure 11 (page 30). NOTE: The side plates have five sets of discrete holes, marked 27 through 31. Use the holes that correspond to the cabinet rail-to-rail depth. See Table 9 (page 29). Tighten the screws to 10 in/lb. 3. 4. Install the Director in the cabinet.

Powering on the Director CAUTION: Use the supplied power cords. Ensure that the facility power receptacle is the correct type, supplies the required voltage, and is properly grounded. To power on the Director: 1. Connect two AC power cords to the power supply assemblies. 2. Connect the power cords to a power source with a voltage of 200 to 240 VAC, 47 to 63 Hz or to a power source with voltage of 110 to 120 VAC, 47 to 63 Hz.
• FS8-18 encryption blade—FC ports are numbered 0 through 15 from bottom to top. The two 10/100/1000 Base-T ports are numbered from the bottom as GE0 and GE1. • FX8-24 port blade—Ports are numbered in groups. FC ports are numbered 0 through 11 in two vertical rows of six ports, starting from the bottom left and bottom right in the lower group of 12 ports. They are labeled FC on the front panel diagram. The two 10-GbE ports are 0 and 1 and are in the left column above the FC ports.
IMPORTANT: Do not route the cables in front of the air exhaust vent. Do not use tie-wraps with optical cables because they are easily overtightened and can damage the optic fibers. For easier maintenance, label the fiber optic cables and record the devices to which they are connected. NOTE: The FC8-64 high-density port blade cannot use the standard LC cables because the pitch between optics in the mSFP optical transceiver is smaller than in standard SFPs.
1. Position one of the optical transceivers so that the key is oriented correctly to the port. Insert the transceiver into the port until it is firmly seated and the latching mechanism clicks. Transceivers are keyed to be inserted with the correct orientation. If the transceiver does not slide in easily, verify the orientation. 2.

3 Director login and configuration This chapter provides information about configuring the SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director. NOTE: If an FS8-18 encryption blade is installed, see the Fabric OS Encryption Administrator's Guide for information on configuring the encryption functions. You can find the document on the Manuals page of the HP Business Support Center website: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/networking/b_switches/index.html Select B-series Director Switches.
Stop bits—1 Flow control—None For most UNIX systems, enter the following string at the prompt: tip /dev/ttyb -9600 However, if ttyb is in use, enter: tip /dev/ttya -9600 When the terminal emulator application stops reporting information, press Enter. The following login prompt appears: CP0 Console Login: 6. Log in to the Director as admin. The default password is passw0rd (the sixth character is a zero). At the initial login, you are prompted to enter new admin and user passwords.
3. Set up the CP0 IP address by entering the ipAddrSet -cp 0 command: swDir:admin> ipAddrSet -cp 0 Enter the configuration information at the prompts. 4. Set up the CP1 IP address by entering the ipAddrSet -cp 1 command: swDir:admin> ipAddrSet -cp 1 Enter the configuration information at the prompts. The following is a sample IP configuration: swDir:admin> ipAddrSet -chassis swDir:admin> ipaddrset -chassis Ethernet IP Address [0.0.0.0]: 192.168.1.1 Ethernet Subnetmask [0.0.0.0]: 255.255.255.
Customizing a switch name The Director switch name can be up to 30 characters; can include alphabetic, numeric, and underscore characters; and must begin with an alphabetic character. NOTE: Changing the switch name causes a domain address format RSCN to be issued. To customize the switch name: 1. Enter the switchName command followed by the new name in double quotation marks. swDir:admin> switchName "swModularSwitch5" Committing configuration... Done. swModularSwitch5:admin> 2.
2. Use the date command to set the date and time. The syntax is date "mmddHHMMyy" Where: • mm is the month. Valid values are 01 through 12. • dd is the date. Valid values are 01 through 31. • HH is the hour. Valid values are 00 through 23. • MM is minute. Valid values are 00 through 59. • yy is the year. Valid values are 00 through 99. NOTE: Values greater than 69 are interpreted as 1970 through 1999. Values less than 70 are interpreted as 2000-2069.
2. Enter the tsClockServer command. The syntax is switch:admin> tsClockServer "ntp1;ntp2" where ntp1 is the IP address or DNS name of the first NTP server that the switch must access, and ntp2 is the optional second NTP server. The operand “ntp1;ntp2” is optional. By default, this value is LOCL, which uses the local clock of the principal or primary switch as the clock server. The tsClockServer command accepts multiple server addresses in IPv4, IPv6, or DNS name formats.
3. Position a cable so that the key (the ridge on one side of the cable connector) is aligned with the slot in the transceiver. Insert the cable into the transceiver until the latching mechanism clicks. Cables are keyed so that they can be inserted with the correct orientation only. If a cable does not slide in easily, verify the orientation. 4. 5. 6. 7. Repeat Step 1 through Step 3 for the remaining ports. Organize the cables. See “Managing cables” (page 32).
5. Verify the Director and port status using the switchShow -qsfp command. The following example shows an SN8000B 4-Slot Director with a core blade installed in slot 3. Your output will look similar. NOTE: The state of an unconnected QSFP (shown QSFP 0 and Ports 0-3 in the example) appears as No_SigDet . This is different from the state of an unconnected SPF, which appears as No_Synch. QSFP 7 (ports 3/28–3/31, Index 748–751) shows a connected QSFP.
Installing SFP+ and mSFP transceivers and cables Complete the following steps to install SFP-type optical transceivers. NOTE: mSFP transceivers are compatible only with the FC8-64 port blade. While they will fit in other blades, such a configuration is unsupported and will generate an error. 1. Add the optical transceivers and cables to the Fibre Channel ports. The ports are color-coded to indicate which can be used in the same port group for trunking (trunking port groups can be up to eight ports).
2. 3. 4. Use Telnet to log on to the switch as admin. From the workstation, enter the switchShow command to verify the status of switches and ports. From the workstation, enter the fabricShow command to verify the status of the fabric. To back up the configuration: 1. Enter configUpload -vf to upload virtual fabric data. 2. Enter configUpload to upload the Director configuration to the server so that it is available for downloading to a replacement Director.
4 Monitoring system components The Director is engineered for reliability and requires no routine operational steps or maintenance. This chapter describes the CLI commands and LED patterns that you use to determine the status of each component. For more information, see the Web Tools Administrator’s Guide and the Fabric OS Administrator’s Guide 7.0.1. Commands To monitor the health of the Director, use the switchShow and chassisShow commands.

Monitoring the core switch blade status To determine the status of a CR16-4 blade: 1. Observe the LED indicators on the core switch blade (see Figure 23 (page 57)). The LED patterns can change temporarily during POST and other diagnostic tests. For information about interpreting the LED patterns, see Table 11 (page 56). 2. 5 Replacing FRUs This chapter provides information for replacing FRUs. IMPORTANT: You do not need any special tools to replace Director FRUs. The Director can continue to operate during many of the FRU replacements if the conditions specified in the procedure are followed. Replacing the chassis door This section describes how to remove and replace the chassis door. The door must be installed properly to ensure that the Director meets EMI and other regulatory requirements.

Use the chassisShow command to display status information about the blades, including part numbers (xx-xxxxxxx-xx), and serial numbers. Ensure that traffic is not flowing through the blade (port status LED should be off). NOTE: Before removing any cables from a blade, note the cable order (identify each cable by its physical port). If you are replacing multiple blades, replace one blade at a time. 7.

Install the transceivers and cables in the blade. For mSFP optical transceivers (FC8-64 only), HP recommends installing the cables in the transceivers before installing the transceivers in the blade. Each Director has two CP8 blades, which are located in slots 4 and 5. NOTE: If the new CP blade does not have the same firmware version as the active CP blade, you must bring them to the same firmware version.
• The clock is inaccurate or the CP blade does not boot up or shut down properly.
d. 7. Log in to the new active CP blade. Enter the firmwareShow command to view the firmware version of the active CP blade. To remove a CR16-4 blade: 1. Remove the chassis door. See “Removing the chassis door” (page 63). 2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the two thumb screws from the ejectors. Installing an ICL cable To install an ICL cable: 1. While holding the rubber housing, align the ICL cable with the QSFP transceiver and push it into the transceiver until it is firmly seated. The status LED displays steady amber until both ends of the cable are inserted and the link is established. The cable housing is keyed to fit into the QSFP transceiver only one way. 2. Attach the other end of the ICL cable with their respective connectors on the core switch blade.
Any of the following events can indicate the need to replace the chassis: • Visible mechanical damage to the chassis, including damage to sheet metal or card guides that prevents correct installation of a blade. • Bent or damaged connectors on the backplane (the surface inside the chassis to which the blades connect).
