Read these inst
ructions to quickly set up the HP StorageWorks DC SAN
Backbone Direc
tor (the DC Dir ector) as a standalone unit.
These instruct
ions provide basic configuration steps. For detailed rack

Figure 1 shows the port side of the DC Director with the following
standard system blades:
• Core Switch blade (CR8)
• Control Processor blade (CP8)
Figure 1 also shows a full comp lement of optional blades installed, using
the FC8-48
port blade as an example. Your configuration will vary if
you purcha
sed other optional blades.

Verify the insta
llation requirements
To set up the DC Director for the first time, you will need:
• AminimumoftwopeopletosafelyslidetheDCDirectorfromone
surface to another
• 1/2-inch socket wrench (to remove pallet bolts)
• #2 Phillips screwdriver ( to remove cable management comb)
• Pallet jack
• Hydraulic lift or assisted lift, able to raise to a minimum of 140 cm.
(55 in.) with a minimum capacity of 113 kg (250 lb)
• Power cables and serial cable (provided in the Accessor y Kit)
• Workstation with a serial port or terminal server port and a terminal
emulator application (such as HyperTerminal)
• Ethernet IP addresses for the switch (1) and for the Control P rocessor
and Core Switch blades (2)—total of three addresses
• Ethernet cabling (optional) for Telnet access
• Fiber optic cables, cable ties, and cable pillars
• Optional Small form-factor pluggable (SFP) or Extended form-factor
pluggable (XFP) optical transceivers, as required
Unpack the carton
CAUTION:
A fully populated DC Director (with eight FC8-48 port cards
providing 384 ports) weighs approximately 104 kg (228 lb)
andrequiresahydraulicorassistedlift.
1. Remov
e the upper portion of the shipping cr ate.
a. Remov
e the straps securing the carton to the pallet or skid.
b. Liftthecartonoffofthepallet. Leavethefoamontopofthe
chassis to hold the kits in place during transfer to the installation
are
a. Save the shipping carton for future use.
2. Tra
nsport the chassis on the pallet to the installation area, using a
pallet jack or other assisted lift. The plastic pallet cannot fitthrough
doorways that are less than 91 cm (36 in.) wide.
3. Remove the Rack Mount Kit, Accessory Kit, packing foam, and
a
ntistatic plastic from the chassis and set aside.

emove the chassis door.

emovethecablemanagementcomb(Figure 1).
6. Position the pallet so that the bottom of the chassis is level with
the installation surface.
7. If the chassis is on a pallet jack or lift, stabilize to prevent the chassis
from moving during the transfer.
8. Unscrew the four bolts holding the DC Director to the pallet and
remove the brackets.
9. Gently slide the chassis onto the final installation surface, ensuring
that it remains supported during the transfer.
IMPORTANT:
To ensure adequate cooling, install the chassis with the nonport
side facing the air-intake aisle. This prevents the fans from
pulling in heated exhaust air.
10. Reinstall the cable management comb and chassis door.

14U Rack Mount Kit hardware requ i red for the DC Director:
• 10-32 x 5/8 in. panhead Phillips screws with washers (six
required for the DC Director)
For use with an HP 42U rack (or racks with square holes):
• 10-32 retainer nuts (six required for the DC Director)
• 1/4-20 x 1/2 in. panhead Phillips screws, with glue
(twenty-two required for the DC Director)
• 0.375 in. alignment washers (twenty-two required for the
DC Director)
For use with racks with round holes:
• 10-32clipnuts(sixrequiredfortheDCDirector)
• 1/4-20 x 1/2 in. panhead Phillips screws, with lock washers
(twenty-two required for the DC Director)
IMPORTANT:
Order SFP transceivers sep a rately. The HP DC SAN Backbone
Director 8Gb port blades support HP transceivers labeled
