HP ProLiant DL100 G2 Data Protection Storage Server administration guide (June 2006)

Sessions information
The sessions scr
een provides the ability to view or terminate active sessions.
Server Management System
The Server Management System (SMS) is designed to simplify the management of single servers. SMS
keeps a 24–hour watch on a server to ensure normal operation. For servers with Intelligent Platform
Management Interface (IPMI) support, SMS can also manage IPMI hardware components through
the software interface.
SMS functions are described below:
Assets control—SMS provides the detailed hardware conguration information of the server.
Status monitor—SMS monitors the real-time status of the server, and provides the real-time
information of the CPU, memor y, partitions, and NIC. For servers with IPMI support, the real-time
values of IPMI sensors are also provided. An administrator can know whether the server is
healthy or not, and take appropriate actions. Thresholds can be set and event triggers dened to
automate management of the system status.
Event handler—SMS provides two kinds of event handling mechanisms: the SMS event trigger
and IPMI platform event lter (PEF). The SMS event trigger is a mechanism for triggering
responding a ctions automatically when specic events occur to the server. This helps to solve
problems when they rst appear. The IPMI PEF provides a mechanism for conguring the BMC to
take selected actions on event messages, so that the IPMI hardware can be protected.
Schedule task—Administrators can denetasksfortheSMSagenttocarryoutataspecied
time, such a s reboot, shutdown, or launching executable les.
Report—The SMS report feature is a summary of relevant information over a period of time that
can be sent to an administrator or other ser ver manager through a m ail server.
Console redirect—Serial over LA N (SOL) is supported. When a host ser ver restarts, users can
observe POST boot messages and initiate ROM-based setup routines to congure the hardware of
the host ser ver remotely. Under OS mode, the output is redirected to a serial port. Therefore,
users can view and control the host server.
Other functions:
•SMSandIPMIeventlogs
SMS and IPMI accounts management
Threshold settings for CPU, memory, partition usages, and IPMI sensors
Remote p ower control on ser vers
SMS provides two management interfaces:
SMS standalone management—This provides server management through the SMS agent an d
IPMI protocol when the server is powered on.
SMS I PMI remote console—This allows you to manag e the I PMI system of a server, even while
powered off.
For information on conguring and using SMS, see the Server Management System User Manual that is
provided on the documentation CD.
Setu
pcompletion
Aft
er the D ata Protection Storage Ser ver is physically set up and the basic conguration is established as
described in the HP ProLiant Da ta Protection Storage Server installation guide, additional setup tasks
must be completed. Depending on the deployment scenario of the storage server, these steps can
vary. These additional steps can include:
Run
ning Microsoft Windows Update—HP highly recommends that you run Microsoft Windows
up
dates to identify, review, and install the latest, applicable, critical security updates on the storage
