HP ProLiant DL100 G2 Data Protection Storage Server administration guide (June 2006)

A Network adapter teaming
Network adapter teaming is software-based technology used to increase a server’s network availability
and performance. Teaming enables the logical grouping of physical adapters in the same server
(regardless of whether they are embedded devices or Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) adapters)
into a virtual adapter. This virtual adapter is seen by the network and server-resident network-aware
applications as a single network connection.
Broadcom NIC teaming
The B roadcom Advanced Control Suite 2 (BACS2) is an integrated utility providing information about
each Broadco
m network adapter on the storage server. The Broadcom Advanced Server Program
(BASP), whi
ch runs within BACS2, is used to congure teams for load balancing, fault tolerance, and
virtual local area networks (VLANs) .

Broadcom Smart Load Balancing (SLB) provides for switch-independent, bidirectional, fault-tolerant
teaming and load balancing. Switch independence implies that there is no specic suppor t for this
function required in the switch, allowing SLB to be compatible with a ll switches.
The BASP continually monitors the ports for link loss. In the event of link loss on any port, trafcis
auto
matically diverted to other ports in the team. The SLB teaming mode supports switch fault tolerance
by a
llowing the teaming conguration across different switches, provided that the switches a re on the
same physical network.
