2. Type binary and press ENTER.
3. Type put filename
/ram (where filename is the name of the firmware file) and press ENTER.
A message is displayed confirming that the file was sent.
4. Type quit and press E
NTER.
Loading a New Image using Xmodem (fw/xmodem)
This command loads a new firmware image from the host system to the switch using the
HyperTerminal® program and the serial port (RS-232 connection).
NOTE: The HyperTerminal session’s baud rate should be set to 115200 for Xmodem transfers (see
“Connecting through a Serial Interface” on page 5 for all of the serial parameters). To configure the baud
setting, click File > Properties. Under the Settings tab, click Configure and set the bits per second to
115200.
If a connection to the switch is already established, disconnect from the switch before changing the baud
setting.
To download firmware using HyperTerminal via the serial port:
1. From the Firmware menu (fw), type xmodem and press E
NTER.
A confirmation request is displayed.
2. Type y and press E
NTER to proceed with the download.
NOTE: If the switch is rebooted after the Flash memory is erased, the firmware file in the alternate
image will be lost. Do not reboot the switch until the new firmware file has been successfully
downloaded into the alternate image.
The following message is displayed and the character “C” begins to display across the screen
one character at a time:
3. In HyperTerminal, click Transfer > Send File.
4. Set the protocol to 1K Xmodem.
5. Click Browse to locate the firmware file on the host system. The filename’s suffix is .dwn.
6. Double-click the firmware filename to select it and click Send.
After the firmware is downloaded, the following message is displayed:
7. Type show and press E
NTER.
Two firmware images may be stored on the switch–Image 1 and Image 2. The active image is
the firmware image that is currently running, while the alternate image is the firmware image
that is not running at the moment. Only one image may be active at a time.
The alternate firmware image (the new image that was downloaded) will automatically be
loaded the next time the switch is reset.
8. Type reset and press E
NTER to reboot the switch to activate the new image.
