Appendix B Upgrading software
This chapter describes how to upgrade system software while the firewall is operating normally or when the
firewall cannot correctly start up.
System software types
The firewall system software includes BootWare image, system software images, and configuration files.
This chapter describes how to upgrade the system software images and configuration files.
BootWare images
The BootWare image comprises a basic section and an extended section. The basic section is the minimum
code that bootstraps the system. The extended section enables hardware initialization and provides system
management menus. You can use these menus to load software and the startup configuration file or manage
files when the firewall cannot correctly start up.
NOTE:
Generally, there is no need to upgrade the BootWare program independently. The device
uses the shipped BootWare program.
System software images
System software images are used at device startup. The F5000 firewall supports three types of system software
images:
Main system software image—Used by default.
Backup system software image—Used when the main system software image is invalid.
Secure system software image—Used when the backup system software image is invalid. If the secure
system software image is also invalid, the switch displays a failure prompt.
A system software image is a .bin file such as main.bin.
The system software images of the F5000 firewall are saved in a build-in CF card by default.
Configuration file
A configuration file saves the configuration you make on the firewall.
