Binding physical ports to IRF ports
To establish an IRF connection between two devices, you must bind at least one physical port to IRF-port
1 on one device and to IRF-port 2 on the other. For link redundancy and load sharing, bind multiple
physical ports to one IRF port.
In standalone mode, binding a physical port to an IRF port does not affect the current configuration of the
port. However, when the operating mode changes to IRF mode, the default configuration of the physical
IRF port restores, and you can only execute the shutdown, description, and flow-interval commands on
the physical port. For more information about these commands, see Layer 2—LAN Switching Command
Reference.
Configuration restrictions and guidelines
W
ARNING!
If you are using a 40-GE port for IRF connection, HP recommends completin
g
the port split or combination
operation before adding the device to an IRF fabric. You can use the using tengige command or the usin
g
fortygige command to split 40-GE QSFP+ ports into 10-GE ports or recombine 10-GE ports into 40-GE
ports. These operations require a card reboot and might cause an IRF fabric topology change.
Make sure the IRF physical ports are operating as Layer 2 interfaces. Layer 3 interfaces cannot be bound
to IRF ports. You can set a physical port as a Layer 2 or Layer 3 interface by using the port link-mode
{ bridge | route } command (see Layer 2—LAN Switching Configuration Guide).
When you bind physical ports to an IRF port, set all the physical ports to operate in the same mode:
normal or enhanced. The physical ports of two neighboring IRF ports must operate in the same mode. If
you do not specify a mode, the enhanced mode applies.
If you use 10-GE ports for IRF connection, the following restrictions apply:
The 10-GE ports are grouped in ascending order of port number, starting at 1. Each group includes
four ports. All ports in the same group must be used for the same purpose (physical IRF ports or
normal network ports, but not both).
Before creating or removing an IRF port binding, shut down all the 10-GE ports in the same group.
After you are finished, use the undo shutdown command to bring up all the 10-GE ports in the same
group.
These restrictions do not apply to 40-GE ports.
