braces { } Indicates required elements in syntax descriptions where there is
more than one option. You must choose only one of the options. Do
not type the braces when entering the command.
For example, if the command syntax is:
show portchannel {<1-12>|hash|information}
you would enter: show portchannel <1-12>
or: show portchannel hash
or: show portchannel information
brackets [ ] Indicates optional elements in syntax descriptions. Do not type the
brackets when entering the command.
For example, if the command syntax is:
show ip ospf interface [<1-248>]
you would enter: show ip ospf interface
or: show ip ospf interface <1-248>
italic text Indicates variables in command syntax descriptions. Also indicates
new terms and book titles.
For example, if the command syntax is:
show spanning-tree stp <1-128>
then <1-128> represents a number between 1 and 128.
