ATM Configuration and Troubleshooting Guide
Configuring EMS High Availability over ATM

Chapter 6 101
ATM Adapter/Link/Switch Failure
Local recovery for an adapter, link, or switch failure requires a specific
kind of configuration. The configuration, and what happensif an adapter,
link, or switch fails, are discussed below.
Necessary Configuration The local recovery solution relies on the
recommended configuration of having at least two identical ATM
adapters per system, with the adapters connected to separate switches.
One exception to this recommendation exists: Hewlett-Packard supports
local recovery when the primary ELAN interface is configured on a
J2468A (ATM-HSC 622 Mbit/s) adapter and the secondary interfaces are
configured on a J2469A (ATM-HSC 155 Mbit/s [+]) adapter. However,
because of the difference in transfer rates between these two adapters,
only the UBR traffic parameter is supported in this configuration.
(Although the J2468A adapter is being discontinued beginning with this
release, this information is still included for backwards compatibility.)
Note that when different types of cards are configured as primary and
secondary, a warning appears while you are in SAM.
NOTE An ATM adapter must be configured either with primary ELAN
interfaces or secondary ELAN interfaces. A mix of primary and
secondary ELAN interfaces on a single adapter is not possible. However,
you can run Classical IP on an adapter used to provide backup ELAN
interfaces.
