ATM Configuration and Troubleshooting Guide

Logging and Tracing ATM Activity
Overview
Chapter 10 287
Overview
NetTL is a standard HP-UX troubleshooting tool. It is used to trace both
data and signalling traffic passing through the ATM adapter, and to log
significant ATM events. The NetFmt facility allows you to filter out
messages you are not interested in and format the information produced
by NetTL.
The default logging settings record unusual or exceptional events such as
errors, warnings, and state transitions. If a disaster log message occurs,
the message is formatted and written to the system console. Logging
runs as a normal part of the system operation.
Tracing is a detailed examination of the operations performed by a
subsystem. It is used only as a debugging and troubleshooting tool (it is
not part of the standard operation of a subsystem, and is not turned on
automatically). The trace messages record normal operation of the ATM
networking subsystem, including the reception and transmission of IP
packets, AAL frames, etc.
Since NetTL and NetFmt are part of a larger subsystem used by many
HP-UX products, only ATM-specific information is presented in this
chapter. For more detailed information about using NetTL and NetFmt,
refer to Installing and Administering LAN/9000 Software and the
command man pages.
