ATM Configuration and Troubleshooting Guide
Installing and Configuring the ATM Software
Preparing for Configuration
Chapter 2 17
Preparing for Configuration
Before you start configuring your ATM adapter, check that the following
are true:
• The ATM adapter and software are installed (use lanscan as
described in “B” on page 192).
• You have an IP address and subnet mask for every interface that will
be configured on the ATM adapter. You canconfigure one Classical IP
interface and up to 32 emulated LAN interfaces on the same adapter.
• You have superuser rights for the SAM utility.
• The ATM adapter is connected to a correctly configured and
operational ATM switch or edge device (see your ATM switch
documentation if necessary).
You can configure the ATM link if the ATM adapter is not connected
to a switch. However, the switch must be up and running and be UNI
3.0, 3.1, or 4.0 compliant to support automatic address recovery.
Recommendations
This section discusses recommendations for the HP-HSC and HP-PCI
buses (discontinued adapters are not shown).
• All buses (HP-HSC and HP-PCI).
— Application-related recommendations:
— For standard applications (for example, ftp, NFS, and
others), if the socket size is configurable, choose socket size
and message length values of at least 128 Kbytes.
— For a customized application, use the IOCTL SETSOCKOPT to
define a socket size of at least 128 Kbytes. When possible,
design the application to use the largest size of message
possible (at least 128 Kbytes). Avoid using the NO_DELAY
option of TCP, so that you do not overuse the CPU.
