1 Check that you have the necessary addresses Check that you have the necessary addresses • For all installations you need the ATM adapter’s IP address. • For installations where the local network uses subnets you need the subnet mask of the local network. • For installations where you intend to use LAN emulation you need: • an IP address for each emulated LAN • the IP address of the LECS (LAN emulation configuration server) • For installations where you are connecting to a non-UNI 3.

Cleaning precautions Hewlett-Packard strongly recommends that you keep the fiber optic cable plugs clean by always covering the ends of the cable with the protective dust caps when the cables are not connected to the ATM adapter.
2 HP 9000 B, C, D and J-Class systems 5 Install the ATM adapter in your system, referring to the system documentation for installation instructions: • • • Note Class B: “Owner’s Guide” Class C and J: “Owner’s Guide” Class D: “I/O Card Upgrade Guide” If you have problems when installing the UTP Cat5 J2499A ATM adapter, Hewlett-Packard recommends that you remove the cards in the adjacent slots, install the ATM adapter and then reinstall the other cards.

HP 9000 K-Class systems 6 Unscrew the two retaining screws of the host board. 7 Remove the host board from the system. 8 Put the two hooks on the face plate of the ATM adapter into the slots on the face plate of the host board and press the connector firmly into the socket on the host board. ➁ ➀ 9 Screw the two face plates together. 10 CAREFULLY and SLOWLY replace the host board in the system. 11 Fasten the host board in place using the two retaining hooks, and replace the two screws.
2 HP 9000 K-Class systems 12 If you are connecting to an ATM switch, consult your switch documentation. 13 To connect the ATM adapter to an ATM switch, or back-to-back with another ATM adapter, you must: Note • Connect the ATM cable to the ATM adapter and to a free port on other device in such a way that the cables are “crossed over” so that the transmit of one device connects to the receive of the other device. With UTP Cat 5 cables, you must use a cross-over cable.
