Enabling fast forwarding on an Ethernet interface
IMPORTANT:
Enabling or disabling fast forwarding on an Ethernet interface of a SAP module restores all confi
g
urations
of the interface to the default.
This feature is supported on only routers configured with SAP modules.
Fast forwarding reduces route lookup time and improves packet forwarding efficiency by performing
hardware forwarding. A router uses the routing table to forward the first packet of a flow. Fast forwarding
creates an entry for the flow and uses the entry to forward subsequent packets of the flow.
Follow these guidelines when you enable fast forwarding on Ethernet interfaces:
Fast forwarding takes effect only when both the receive and send interfaces are on SAP modules
and the two interfaces are enabled with fast forwarding.
Fast forwarding is supported on only Ethernet interfaces operating in route mode.

By default, Ethernet interfaces on SAP
modules operate in route mode.
4. Enable fast forwarding.
ip fast-forwarding By default, fast forwarding is disabled.
When fast forwarding is enabled on an Ethernet interface, the Ethernet interface supports only local
services, IP routing services, and MPLS services, such as NTP, DHCP, Telnet, TFTP, NQA, DNS, SSH, AAA,
QoS, OSPF, BGP, RIP, and IS-IS. The interface does not support other services, such as ASPF, NAT, Portal,
Firewall, IPsec, L2TP, and GRE. You cannot configure these services on the interface.
