HP Intelligent Management Center v5.2 Application Performance Manager Administrator Guide
1
1 Application Manager overview
Application Manager (APM) is a network management software product based on the IMC platform. It
is used to monitor various applications in the network. During the monitoring process, APM collects data
from the applications and generates an application monitor report that can be used by operators to
resolve application performance bottleneck problems, and ensure that network services are available,
reliable, and continuous.
Figure 1 shows the working model of APM, the IMC Platform, and related business applications. The
hosts are devices on which the applications run. Supported host types include PCs, workstations, servers,
minicomputers, routers, and switches.
Applications monitored by APM can include programs, databases, middleware, services, protocols, and
operating systems. For more information, see "Application type management."

Installation and network planning
Installation requirements
To install the APM module, you must have IMC version 5.1 installed and deployed on your network and
have a connection to a supported database. APM can be installed in any of the following environments:
Windows + SQL Server
Windows + MySQL
Linux + MySQL
Linux + Oracle
The APM installation procedures are similar to the installation of other IMC modules. For more
information, see HP IMC Installation Guide.
APM network planning
APM can be used in various scenarios with the most typical being to monitor applications in a data
center as shown in Figure 2. Additionally, APM can be deployed in any management network that allows
access to business applications.
