Introduction HP Integrated Lights-Out 3 (iLO 3) helps you meet demands for IT efficiency and responsiveness, especially in corporate data centers. iLO 3 is an autonomous management subsystem residing on select HP ProLiant and BladeSystem servers. It provides you with secure remote management capabilities, regardless of server status or location. iLO 3 provides alerts, server status, power information, power management, and remote control capabilities to diagnose OS or server problems remotely.

Power/fault isolation The power and fault isolation logic splits iLO 3 into two separate areas: one operating under normal system power; the other connected to the auxiliary power plane of the server. Even when you power down the server, iLO 3 continues to operate, although the portions of iLO 3 that communicate with the system processor are isolated. Power and fault isolation logic also monitors the system for any unexpected behavior such as a system power fault or PCI bus fault.

Shared network port Some servers offer a Shared Network Port (SNP) that allows network access to both iLO 3 and the server through a single network port (see Figure 3), rather than dedicating a second port to iLO 3. With the SNP, iLO 3 network traffic travels through a sideband connection on one of the NIC interfaces. Although the iLO traffic shares a port with the server OS traffic, both iLO 3 and the server NIC have their own MAC and IP address.

drives, create an emergency repair disk, and perform disaster recovery of failed operating systems, among other tasks. iLO 3 uses a client-server model to perform virtual media functions. It streams the virtual media data across a live network connection between the remote management console and the managed server. The Java and Windows IRC provides the data to iLO 3 when requested. The virtual media capability lets you insert a virtual USB device remotely into the managed server.

HP Power Regulator HP Power Regulator is an OS-independent power management capability of ProLiant servers that lets you control power use without significantly affecting server performance. In its default configuration, Power Regulator dynamically adjusts power consumption to match the workload of the server.

ProLiant servers can have up to 64 sensors located on DIMMs, hard drives, and elsewhere throughout the server. The exact number of thermal sensors depends upon the server platform. You can view the status of the temperature sensors through the iLO web pages and HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM). Security It is important to have strong security surrounding the iLO 3 device because it provides so many server control capabilities.

 They use the same security policies as the rest of the network. Because directory services let you authenticate a user by the same login process employed throughout the rest of the network, you can enforce corporate standards for security easily.  They support thousands of users rather than only the few that iLO 3 supports without directory integration.  They provide role-based administration with access and time restrictions, letting you control access rights to iLO 3 devices more closely.

Integration with other management tools iLO 3 integrates with other HP management tools such as HP SIM, Insight Control, and Insight Control for Linux. This integration gives you easy access to iLO 3 information and capabilities. HP management tools incorporate standard management protocols to address your requirements for security, interoperability among heterogeneous platforms, and ease of use.

Standards-based management Technologies for server management continue to evolve, and multiple server management specifications are contending for industry-standard status. We have contributed to the development of several specifications and have strategically incorporated them into our management tools. iLO 3 supports the Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) initiative. With the SMASH Server Management Command Line Protocol (SM CLP), you can interrogate and control systems directly.
