Removing and Replacing Hot-Plug SCSI Hard Drives
The only hot-plug devices in the server blade are the SCSI hard drives. The following procedures show how to
remove and replace the hot-plug SCSI hard drives. You do not need to remove the server blade from the
enclosure to replace a hot-plug SCSI drive. To assess hard drive status, observe the hot-plug SCSI hard drive
status LEDs. For an explanation of these LEDs, see “Server Blade Front Panel LEDs” on page 27.
IMPORTANT If disk drive mirroring is enabled, then it is not necessary to power down the server blade
before removing or replacing a hot-plug SCSI hard drive. If mirroring is not enabled, then
perform a graceful OS shutdown before removing a hard drive to protect data.
You do not need to remove the server blade from the enclosure to remove and replace a SCSI
hard drive.
Removing a Hot-Plug SCSI Hard Drive
To remove a hot-plug SCSI hard drive, perform the following steps:

CAUTION Always populate hard drive bays with either a hot-plug SCSI hard drive or a hard drive blank.
Operating the server blade without a hot-plug SCSI hard drive or hard drive blank results in
improper airflow and improper cooling, which leads to thermal damage.
