This document contains important information regarding BL860c i2, BL870c i2 and BL890c i2 Server

Upgrades along with a summary of the upgrade process. The full upgrade documentation can be found in

the HP Integrity BL860c i2, BL870c i2 & BL890c i2 Server Blade User Service Guide, Chapter 5 (http://

bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02110937/c02110937.pdf).

IMPORTANT: Read the HP Integrity BL860c i2, BL870c i2 & BL890c i2 Server Blade User Service

Guide carefully before implementing the upgrade.

The basic upgrade process is as follows:

1. System Check: Minimum Firmware Level

a. Check the server blades that will be upgraded for the correct minimum firmware and update if

necessary. See “Minimum Firmware Revisions” (page 3) for the list of required firmware revisions.

IMPORTANT: Do not install the Upgrade Blade Link until the minimum firmware versions

are correct.

b. Update the firmware for the HP Onboard Administrator and Virtual Connect to the minimum level

specified in the upgrade documentation.

2. Adding Resources

a. Shut down the original server blade using the instructions in the HP Integrity BL860c i2, BL870c

i2 & BL890c i2 Server Blade User Service Guide.

b. Unassign all VC server profiles (if present).

c. Remove the Blade Link from the system to be upgraded.

d. Install any Upgrade Blades included in the Upgrade Kit into the enclosure.

NOTE: Rules governing the version and loading of processor modules, memory DIMMs,

and I/O mezzanine cards must be followed and checked as described in the HP Integrity

BL860c i2, BL870c i2 & BL890c i2 Server Blade User Service Guide.

e. Install the Upgrade Blade Link. NOTE: System Information such as UUID, Serial Number, Product Name, and Product Number are exchanged between the Upgrade Blade Link and the system being upgraded. The resulting system retains the original UUID and Serial Number, but reports a Product Name and Number reflecting the new server. f. The Upgrade Blade Link contains a label with a removable new Product Name and barcode sections for the upgraded server.

Warranty Upon completion of the upgrade, please contact HP with the new Product Number and Serial Number. The warra nty of the original server will be transferred to the upgraded server and the service time will be reset.
