D Safety Requirements for Service Providers
Safety Requirements
When you handle a FRU, follow standard operating practices and use electrostatic discharge (ESD)
protection to minimize any potential damage to yourself and the equipment. See “Using ESD
Protection” (page 93)
NOTE: The Advanced Cluster Hub is a passive component and does not require ESD protection.
Standard Operating Practices
Obtain an ESD protection kit and follow the directions that come with the kit. You can purchase
ESD kits from HP (T99247-A00) or from a local electronics store.
Make sure any ESD wriststrap has a built-in series resistor and includes an antistatic table mat.
Ensure that both FRUs and rack are at ground potential when installing the FRUs:
Before unpacking FRUs, place the packing container on an antistatic table mat.
FRUs that require ESD protection are shipped in ESD protective bags. When opening
packing containers for these FRUs, do not cut the ESD protective bags.
Before moving a FRU from an antistatic table mat, attach the grounding clip from your
ESD wriststrap to any exposed unpainted metal surface on the FRU frame.
Before bringing the FRU in contact with a rack or cabinet, attach the grounding clip to
any exposed unpainted metal surface on the rack frame.
When removing a FRU from a rack, once the FRU is pulled partway out of the cabinet, attach
the grounding clip from your ESD wriststrap to any exposed unpainted metal surface on the
FRU frame.
Before setting a FRU on an antistatic table mat, attach the grounding clip from your ESD
wriststrap to the antistatic table mat.
Store FRUs that require ESD protection in ESD protective bags.
Before any installation procedure, inspect the FRU and the packaging container. Check
connectors for bent or broken pins and look for any other obvious damage. Look for foreign
particles stuck in the connectors.
When installing a FRU that is located on the front side of the cabinet, work quickly to minimize
the amount of time that the cabinet door is open if the system is running.
Before working with electrical equipment, remove all metal accessories, such as rings, watches,
and necklaces.
Before working with electromechanical equipment, restrain items such as long hair and sleeves
that can get caught in the equipment.
